The modern viticultural history of Carneros begins on Stanly Ranch in the1950s when Louis Martini who then owned part of the historic property began a clonal trial of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with UC Davis and another historic California wine family, the Wentes. The well-known Martini and Wente clones of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay emerged from these trials and were propagated and sold by the Wente grapevine nursery. The historic ranch of Judge Stanly greets visitors to the Napa Valley as they drive up Highway 29 towards the city of Napa and anchors the southeastern corner of the Carneros. The fourth incarnation of grape vines on this property began in 2001 with the development of 350 acres of vines using modern clones, spacing and vertical trellising on the property’s clay-loam soils and gently rolling hills. Saintsbury has purchased Stanly Ranch fruit since the 1984 vintage.
\nToday, the 2007 vintage shows classic aged bottle bouquet of dried herbs and bloomed cheese accompanies burnt sugar and spices. The palate is round and juicy with flavors of rich toffee, dried redcherries and cranberry and notes of Valrhona cocoa powder on the long and persistent finish.

We knew this about our Brown Ranch after the first harvest of its Pinot Noir grapes in 1995.
\nWe planted our Brown Ranch to the then-new Dijon clones in 1992 on an exposed ridge. With our first harvest we noticed a unique character to the wines made from these grapes. There are eight lots that are separately aged and tracked. And while each have their unique qualities due to clonal, rootstock and terroir differences, there is a consistent thread running though our Brown Ranch Pinot Noir. We only bottle very small amounts of Brown Ranch Pinot Noir each year. It is packaged into six-bottle boxes with a package design that pays tribute to George Saintsbury.

Now we come full circle as the Vineyard Series Stanly Ranch replaces the Reserve Pinot Noir in our Pinot Noir lineup.

\nWhile Lee Vineyard and Stanly Ranch have significant places in the viticultural history of Carneros, Toyon Farm’s history is that of a horse ranch. Planted in 2000 and 2001, Toyon Farm's weather turns warmer a little earlier in the day and little fingers of soils of volcanic origin intermix with the more typical marine sedimentary clay-loams. It is no wonder that, texturally speaking, Toyon Farm and Brown Ranch pinots have more than a passing resemblance to each other in their fine-grained tannins and persistence and length on the palate.
\nSaintsbury purchased Brown Ranch in 1990. Originally a hayfield and Percheron horse farm, we planted 22 acres to Dijon and Pommard clones of pinot noir. Our first harvest was in 1995. The vineyard is located in an area of Carneros we call the \"banana belt\" in the rolling hills just below the beginnings of the Mayacamas range.
Aged wines can have delicate corks, we recommend using an Ah-So or Durant to gently extract.

\nVINEYARD
\nIn the mid-1990s Jim Pratt, a highly acclaimed vineyard manager to many key Sonoma Coast and Russian River sites, went looking for a property to call his own. After careful deliberation, Jim explored Sebastopol where apple farms were being converted to vineyards. Here he found his ideal spot south of the town of Graton and west of Sebastopol, a ten-acre hillside location on Goldridge soils with the perfect mix of cool fog, wind and abundant afternoon sunshine. The vineyard produces vibrant, naturally high-acid fruit. In 2000, Jim acquired a neighboring property, planted it, and was able to expand his vineyard by seven acres.

\nClones: 47% Pommard, 53% Dijon 23
\nTerroir: Goldridge soil series is well-drained and highly erodible. Poor nutrients in the soil force the vines to struggle - the result is dense clusters. The overall climate is cool, foggy, and sometimes windy, yet with enough sunshine to produce vibrant fruit with intense color and flavor.
\nVINTAGE
\n2013 began warmly. The vines responded by moving quickly through bud break, bloom, and set. The growing season turned long and gave us beautiful fruit. Another great vintage!
\nHarvest: September 14th and 20th
\nWINEMAKING
\nThis vineyard is harvested at night so the fruit is on our crush pad by sunrise. The blocks within the vineyard are kept separate during these first stages of winemaking and like all our pinot noir, the fruit receives gentle handling from the sorting table to small open-top fermenters. The crushed fruit enjoys a cold 5-day soak prior to fermentation. The total cuvaison was 10 days.
\nAging: 10 months in 30% new, 35% 1-year old, and 35% neutral French oak barrels.

Lee Vineyard is considered a quintessential Carneros AVA vineyard site planted in 1967 by Ira and Shirley Lee. Saintsbury’s relationship with the Lee family formed in 1982 and that relationship was instrumental to the replanting of the vineyard, which took place in the 1990s and early 2000s with Dijon, Pommard, and Swan clones.
\nAppellation: Carneros, Napa
\nTerroir: Haire clay loam soil. Exposure to the Petaluma wind gap and San Pablo Bay airstreams creates temperate growing conditions.
\nWinemaking: After night harvesting, the fruit from the Lee Vineyard has a short distance to travel—a quarter mile down the road to Saintsbury. From there, each block remains separate and receives gentle handling from the sorting table to small open-top fermenters for a 5-day cold soak, 11-day total cuvaison. This is a site that requires a cautious and gentle extraction regime for balanced tannins and bright acidity.
\nVintage: 2018 was the year of abundance. Ample winter rainfall led to early budbreak. Paired with a long and steady, moderately cool growing season, winemakers were able to pick when they wanted without pressure from fires or late summer temperature spikes. An ideal season.
\nTasting Notes: The nose opens with black cherry, nutmeg, and rose petals. Dark plum, cherry, earth, and spice fill the palate while full, ripe tannins and balanced acidity provide the perfect structure.

Low-abv, tapas-loving, red wine from the mountains of Mendocino.","content":"Spain's Mencia grape was popularized by the Ribeira Sacra DO, where pitchy, brightly fruited reds are quaffable yet complex. While it is rarely seen in the United States, Tim happened upon some fledgeling vines on a recent vineyard walk with grower Stuart Bewley at Alder Springs in Mendocino. When Tim giddily inquired about the grapes, Stuart replied \"They're for you, Tim\". Our first ever bottling of Mencia is an exploration of this rare fruit, which bares some resemblance to our beloved Pinot Noir. Somewhere between the delicacy of Burgundy and the rustic spice of Rhône Syrah, the first Saintsbury Mencia vintage won't be around for long.
\nTasting Notes: Pure, pitchy red currant fruit on the palate with a floral nose. Savory, pencil-lead minerality adds tension and spice to balance juicy freshness.

\nTerroir: This remote, high elevation vineyard sits on a ridgetop defined by well-draining, decomposed sandstone. This particular site showcases redder soils with a higher iron content and very steep gradients that require hand-farming and harvesting.

After gentle, whole cluster press we implemented more frequent bâtonnage during aging to build texture and evolution in the wine. This single vineyard bottling from Sangiacomo Green Acres includes the Old Wente Heritage Block, head-trained, sprawling vines planted in the late 1960s. We're the only outside winery with access to this precious fruit.

chapter leading them to a ten acre apple orchard in Green Valley of Russian River Valley. A trifecta of events - meeting and taking a class from vineyard manager Jim Pratt, the fall-out of the apple market, and embracing their innate love for hard work - launched Nancy and Chuck as premium grape growers. Planted exclusively to Pinot Noir in 2000 and sustainably farmed, Sundawg Ridge Vineyard has become an exceptional site that produces fruit with incredible depth and sous bois qualities.
\nSaintsbury was one of the first winemakers in California to propogate the Pommard clone, and today we celebrate it for it's distinctive expression. In a vintage that was naturally quite restrained and underdeveloped, this Pommard brings a blue fruit and savory character to the eager drinker, with plenty of room to grow.

\nTERROIR: Sitting above the morning fog at 240 foot elevation, only twelve miles from the Pacific ocean, the vineyard showcases classic Goldridge soils. A veritable halfpipe of a vineyard, Sundawg Ridge is made up of opposing South and North-facing slopes bounded by forest and blackberry bushes.
\nCLONES: 100% Pommard
\nVINTAGE: A cool, moderate growing season with extended hangtime and excellent fruit integrity. One of the great recent vintages and a classic example of Sundawg Ridge Vineyard–mature tannin with vibrance and purity of fruit.

Here, he found an ideal site south of Graton and west of Sebastopol: a 10-acre hillside location on Goldridge soils with the perfect mix of cold weather —fog and wind — and early afternoon sunshine to produce vibrant high acid fruit.
