The first Cobb wine, sourced from what is now named the ‘Diane Cobb’ block at Coastlands vineyard. It spent 15 months in French oak, 50% of it new, and 130 cases were produced. It offers understated red fruits and potpourri at first, before unpacking and becoming more succulent and plush. It finishes with a fine, powdery texture that I view as a signature of the Cobb wines. Drinking Window 2019 – 2025.

After a while, black cherry, plum, and mineral flavors come forward. Although quite similar to the 2001 Coastlands, it has even more concentrated mid-palate structure. ","reviews-awards":"The second wine made at Cobb and, like the 2001, it comes from what is now called the ‘Diane Cobb’ block. It spent 15 months in French oak, 50% new, and 202 cases were produced. Bursting from the glass, this is a more savoury and energetic expression of Coastlands, with aromas of pine sap and oiled leather followed by flavours of pomegranate and rhubarb. Ross Cobb explained that this wine was somewhat ‘bretty’ in its youth, the remnants of which were subtly apparent but not at all off-putting. Poured from magnum. Drinking Window 2019 – 2025.
\nThis wine was awarded first place among 32 pinot noirs at “In Pinot Veritas” tasting in France. Wines tasted were from Burgundy, North America, and elsewhere internationally. The tasting was organized in Spring 2004 by Arnaud Orsel des Sagets of Tonnellerie Francois Freres, one of the world’s most respected producers of wine barrels.
\nThis is a blend of two nicely complementary Cobb wines. Two barrels of the Pommard pinot noir selection from Coastlands Vineyard were blended with one barrel of Dijon pinot noir selections from the Rice-Spivak Vineyard in Sebastopol, a few miles from Coastlands in western Sonoma County. The three Coastlands & Rice-Spivak blends of 2003, 2004, and 2005 went on to become our favorites.
\nWinemaker’s notes: Complex aromas and flavors of raspberry, boysenberry, cherry and plum. Also cola, earth, herbs, vanilla, and minerals. Rich mouth-feel, full mid-palate structure, and a long finish.

Low yields in Coastlands coincided with the introduction of the Rice-Spivak vineyard into the Cobb lineup, resulting in this rare, non-single-vineyard offering. It spent 16 months in French oak, 45% new, and 348 cases were made. It’s very exotic on the nose, with aromas of evergreen, quince and Juicy Fruit chewing gum. It’s soft and supple but persistent on the palate, with a multifaceted finish displaying a charming combination of black cherries, browned butter and popcorn kernels. Drinking Window 2019 – 2025.

As much as I covet DRC, California Pinot Noir deserves equal time, and the one that wowed me the most in 2009 was the 2006 Cobb Wines Coastlands Vineyard: Diane Cobb from the chilly, ‘true’ Sonoma Coast. It’s gorgeous, with floral, black pepper and savory underbrush aromas and perfectly ripe fruit flavors. There is an ethereal quality to the wine – supple and palate-caressing, yet mouthwateringly refreshing, too, and with just 13.5 percent alcohol. The Diane Cobb Block Pinot isn’t cheap at $72, and is produced in small quantities — which is exactly why it’s on my Christmas list.

Dry and with crackling-fresh acidity, it clocks in at just 13.5% alcohol, shattering the myth that all Californian Pinot Noirs are overly alcoholic.

A beautiful, cool and elegant nose that is ripe without ‘reaching,’ offering up notes of pure red pinot fruit trimmed in plum and violet nuances that lead to delicious, detailed, balanced and sappy medium-bodied flavors that display a trace of mint on the lingering finish. This is lovely with a real sense of harmony and the backend is sneaky long. Definitely worth a look.

Strong, mineral-inflected red and dark berry flavors are given spine by zesty acidity and pick up a bitter cherry pit quality with air. A superb range of Sonoma Coast Pinot Noirs, and among the best 2007s we’ve tasted. All are from limited-production vineyards (around two tons an acre), and display unusually complex and elegant character, with relatively low alcohol levels (13% to 13.8%). The Diane Cobb bottle (a tribute to the founder’s wife and winemaker’s mother, who selected the Pinot clone for this tiny, ‘home block’ vineyard) is exceptional: very ripely flavored, and nearly powerful in style; a supple, full bodied wine, with red currant, toast, clove, new oak, strawberry, and cherry aromas/flavors.” 5/5 Stars – Exceptional quality for its type and style; a superstar within its price category. “Ross Cobb’s Winemaking Odyssey”
All the grapes come from a 1.5-acre block of Coastlands Vineyard planted with a single clone that Diane Cobb (winemaker Ross’ mother) thought was best of the 20 clones she originally planted in a nursery on the site. It delivers gentle raspberry fruit, a pretty violet note, a little soy sauce and slightly darker fruit on the finish.

Our final pinot of the evening, but certainly not our final wine, was the Cobb pinot. I tasted this again yesterday along with two other single vineyard pinot noirs from Cobb, and was duly impressed; I was able to discuss the wines with the winemaker, and had the added delight of meeting the new vineyard owner of Jack Hill as well. This is Amy’s favorite, and she did try to convince me I liked it best. Yes, I loved it but I’m not sure I could pick a favorite! I loved them all. Coastlands was first planted in 1989, before pinot noir went crazy. This tiny 1.5-acre vineyard gave me big bold baking spices, cranberry, strawberry and white pepper. There was also more earth to this wine than the previous two, and there were notes of mushrooms and herbs. All in all, I loved all of the Cobb wines and can’t wait to try them next year (if not sooner)!

Very pure and precise in the mouth, offering energetic raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a jolt of peppery spice. A touch of fresh bay comes up on the long, sappy, admirably focused finish. Has the structure and depth to reward patience.

Since 1989, the Cobb family has farmed this 14-acre parcel on the far Sonoma Coast planted almost entirely to heritage Pinot clones. Bright ruby. Compelling aromas of red berry preserves, smoky minerality, cocoa powder and white pepper, with a sexy note of incense in the background. Dense but tightly coiled, with zesty acidity giving shape and grip to the raspberry, rose and spicecake flavors. A wine of noteworthy finesse as well as power, finishing with excellent cut. This 1.5 acre vineyard is planted to 22 different clones, all on their own roots.

Lively and focused on the palate, offering sappy raspberry and cherry flavors and a silky, seamless texture. The floral quality comes on strong on the delineated, very persistent finish.

Jumping to 2009, we see a different phase in the Cobb winemaking regimen, one that began with the 2006 vintage. The wines spend more time in barrel (20-34 months) but with a reduced percentage of new oak (~35%). The nose here is flashy, laden with baking spices, candlewax and cola, showcasing the riper vintage. The palate is a perfect integration of ripe pomegranates and a kombucha-like earthy freshness. It’s a prime example of a 2009 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, made with poise and restraint. Drinking Window 2019 – 2030

There was a substantial reduction in yield as a result of the challenging 2011 vintage – only 75 cases were produced. The wine has a high-toned nose of bay laurel, wintergreen and spearmint, followed by cranberries and orange zest on the palate, then rose petals on the finish. There was a substantial reduction in yield as a result of the challenging 2011 vintage – only 75 cases were produced. The wine has a high-toned nose of bay laurel, wintergreen and spearmint, followed by cranberries and orange zest on the palate, then rose petals on the finish. The 2012 Pinot Noir Coastlands Vineyard Old Firs Block is the richest and most powerful of these Pinots. A wine of considerable density, that boasts tremendous power and breadth, especially within the context of the house style. Hints of reduction remain, but at the same time, the 2012 has the potential to develop into something truly special. Beams of salinity add energy to the dark red cherry and plum-inflected fruit.

A world apart from the 2011, and the winery’s most popular release, the 2012 Diane Cobb Pinot Noir spent 22 months in French oak, 40% new, and produced 225 cases. Bounding out of the glass is an ever-evolving nose of raspberry, kirsch, and kumquat, while black cherries and cardamom frame the palate and finish. It has the highest ABV of all Cobb’s wines at 14.1%, but it is integrated nicely. A great introduction to this restrained winemaking style for drinkers accustomed to riper California Pinot Noir. The 2012 Pinot Noir Diane Cobb: Coastlands Vineyard, from own-rooted vines planted in 1989, is in many ways the most complete of these wines in that it brings together both the aromatic and fruit-driven components of this site. Exotic spice, orange peel, sweet red plum and pine are some of the many notes that lift from the glass. Deeply expressive, pliant and super-expressive, the Diane Cobb is a total knock-out.

The 2013 Pinot Noir Coastlands Vineyard opens with a rush of exotic aromatics. Orange peel, star anise, cinnamon, mint and dried flowers soar out of the glass. The 50-60% whole clusters add intense aromatics…Ross Cobb gave the 2013 30 months in barrel, which is quite long for Pinot. Readers should expect a wild, eccentric wine that is a sort of roller coaster. There is certainly no shortage of intrigue or personality.

Anyone seeking out great Pinot Noir would do well to look for two words on the label… Sonoma County—it’s arguably America’s greatest Pinot Noir region. Thanks to the brisk ocean breezes of the far Sonoma Coast, or the morning fog that creeps over the Russian River Valley, the climate could not have been better designed for this cool-weather-loving variety.

Out of an extensive tasting of both new releases and library vintages, this was the knockout of the lineup. Aged for 22 months in French oak, 35% new, 275 cases were made. It has an intoxicating nose, equal parts floral, sweet, and savoury. The palate is deep and expansive, and the signature Cobb ‘powdery’ tannin structure wraps up the wine nicely. The 2013 Pinot Noir Diane Cobb: Coastlands Vineyard is once again very pretty and complete because of its overall balance. Crushed flowers, mint, sage, tea leaves and tobacco are some of the signatures in a Pinot that leans towards the more floral, savory side of things. White pepper, cranberry and orange peel add brightness on the finish. Next to the 2012, the 2013 comes across as lacking some depth. The pedigree of this site is so strong, though, that the wine is attractive just the same.

This wine is a pleasure to check in on, and causes you to appreciate Ross Cobb’s policy of holding wines in the bottle until he feels they are ready for the market. Only 200 cases were produced, aged for 22 months in French oak, 35% new. It has a more singular, reductive nose at this early stage of development, followed by cinnamon, nutmeg and blackberry on the palate, with a brooding finish. Drinking Window 2025 – 2035

The 2014 Pinot Noir 1906 Mt. Eden is powerful and intense, with striking intensity in all of its dimensions. Succulent red cherry, cedar, tobacco and dried flowers. A hint of reduction dissipates quickly with air. The 2014 remains firm and in need of either cellaring or a good bit of air to soften further, but it is developing very positively. The 2014 was done with 50% whole clusters and spent 22 months in French oak.

The 2014 Pinot Noir 1906 Pommard offers serious fruit intensity, not to mention phenomenal overall balance. Succulent red cherry, tobacco, spice and dried flowers all flesh out in the glass. Pliant and racy, the 1906 Pommard is one of the most approachable of Ross Cobb’s 2014s. Today, the flavors are really popping. This is a superb showing from the 2014.

Medium garnet in color, this wine smells of bright cherry and raspberry fruit. In the mouth silky cherry and cedar notes have a sour, explosive brightness on the palate that is incredibly compelling. Delicious bright fruit with a nice herbal tinge.

Cobb’s Coastlands Vineyard, ‘1906 Block Pommard’ Pinot Noir is the ‘heavyweight’ of this trio despite being the lowest in alcohol (12.5 percent), reminding us, yet again, that sometimes less is more with regard to ripeness, especially with this variety. The juicy Coastlands Vineyard displays more black fruit compared to the red fruit character of the Rice Spivak bottling. Paradoxically, despite the lower alcohol (less ripe grapes) it has more power and weight. That said, it still shares the captivating ‘flavor without weight’ character and silky, barely noticeable, tannins of the other two bottlings. Cobb has made an extraordinary trio of Pinot Noirs that shows that Burgundy has no monopoly on that grape.

The result is an elegant Pinot Noir, which is bright and lively with beautiful aromas of sweet red cherry, savory herb, and rose pedal, with secondary aromas of crushed stone and smoke. It has a medium body and shows great balance and elegance at this stage. It will benefit from some bottle age and flourish over the next 10-12 years.

Ross Cobb’s 2014 Pinot Noir Coastlands Vineyard Old Firs Block is wild, powerful and exotic. Extended time in barrel (34 months) has given the 2014 quite a bit of depth and texture. Exotic, wild and yet also wonderfully finessed, the 2014 has a lot to offer. Star anise, cedar, tobacco, menthol, dried flowers and crushed leaves add striking shades of nuance. The long, persistent finish makes it next to impossible to resist a second taste. The 2014 was done with 50% whole clusters.

Here we have a great example of Cobb’s extended barrel-ageing regimen: the wine spent 34 months in barrel using 30% new oak. The power and density from this time spent formulating is immediately apparent, with an alluring, dark, mossy quality to the nose that seems to be unique to this block of Coastlands. The palate takes a brighter, more vibrant turn and finishes with sweet liquorice and sassafras notes. It’s an interesting wine to take note of and track over time. 190 cases were produced.

Not unlike the radiant 2013, this is open for business right away, but is a touch more angular and floral throughout. Sage, root beer, and bark aromas lead to a palate of bing cherries, salted caramel and black tea. Give this a couple more years to settle into its high-toned structure. Between the three single-block Coastlands bottlings, I find the Diane Cobb one to be the most aromatically complex and well rounded. 310 cases produced. 22 months in French oak, 35% new. The 2014 Pinot Noir Diane Cobb: Coastlands Vineyard is precise and nuanced, with striking aromatic complexity to play off the dark red cherry fruit. The 50% whole clusters are not especially evident. Medium in body, gracious and lifted, the 2014 has a lot to offer. Cedar, tobacco, dried herbs and dried cherry notes are laced together in this attractive, mid-weight Pinot, with clean, saline notes that support the long, super-expressive finish.

A wine of real density and power, the 2015 Pinot Noir Coastlands Vineyard is going to need at least a few years to come into its own. Today, the tannins are forbidding. Even so, there is more than enough depth and resonance to show what the wine is made of. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, menthol, licorice and wild flowers all fill out the wine’s ample frame. The 2015 is a complete, vivid Pinot that will thrill those fortunate to own it. Because of the tiny yields of the vintage, Cobb added fruit from his Old Firs and 1906 blocks (which are often bottled separately) into the Coastlands Pinot.

David and Diane Cobb planted pinot noir on a southwest-facing ridge in Occidental, four miles from the Pacific, in 1989. Now one of the oldest plantings on the far Sonoma Coast, those vines produced a light-colored 2015 with meaty concentration of flavor, from chewy cherry to tangy orange zest, and an umami character, like porky ramen broth. While this needs time to develop, the freshness should sustain it for years in the cellar.

An elegant, structured Pinot Noir of very fine quality. It is full bodied, finely flavored (cherry, rose petal, red currant, pepper, red licorice, black tea, lavender, oak), very long on the palate, and mildly tannic on the finish.

Powerful and concentrated, the Pinot Noir Diane Cobb: Coastlands Vineyard packs a serious punch in its dense fruit. Here, too, the tannins are plentiful. Tobacco, cedar, rose petal, orange peel and spice all lend an exotic flair, but the 2015 remains an intense, searing wine that begs for cellaring. In this vintage, the Diane Cobb is perhaps not as delineated as it can be, but it is nevertheless a very fine wine. The 2015 was done with 50% whole clusters and spent 22 months in French oak barrels, 50% new.

As its name suggests, this most definitely effuses in forest floor and grippy, supportive walls of firm tannin and oak. From a strong opening, it evolves slowly and with nuance around a light-bodied core of white pepper, effusive red fruit and blood orange, the latter helping to highlight the innate backbone of acidity.

The 2016 Coastlands Vineyard Old First Block is marked by a lovely sense of creaminess that is quite unique in this range. There is plenty of the aromatic intensity that marks all of these wines, the but the Old Firs has a feeling of integration and balance that sets it apart. All the elements meld together effortlessly. Blood orange, raspberry and chalk add shades of nuance in a deep, ample Pinot Noir endowed with tremendous class and personality. The Old Firs is a mix of Martini and Wädenswil clones.

Located nearby a set of 275 year old Douglass Fir trees, this block is set at the top of the vineyard at 1200 feet. A strong saline driven nose starts this off, with citrus rind and red fruits connecting with the saline driven aromatics. Soft and delicate, the wine shows a silky mouthfeel with light red fruits, citrus rind and forest floor flavors. This shows serious range and terroir. Drink 2019-2030

Ross Cobb’s parents planted this block of vines on their Occidental property in 1989. A selection of heritage clones—Wadenswil 2A and Martini—it remains their highest elevation block, at 1,200 feet. This 2016 feels big and ripe, dominated by its oak at the moment, while underneath, there are inviting scents of red-currant and sweet rhubarb and salty, coastal notes of iodine. It needs cellar time to settle.

The 2016 Diane Cobb: Coastlands Vineyard emerges from mix of 18 different Pinot clones on the property. Not only is the Diane Cobb the most complex wine in this range, it is also has the most structure and pure power. Dark cherry, plum, lavender, rose petal and spice open up in the glass, but only with great reluctance. Readers will have to be patient. The 2016 is a truly special wine in the making.

By the fourth day of tasting this wine, its tough tannins turned lighter, almost airy in their sandstone abrasion, while the spicy notes of strawberry, cranberry and rhubarb turned racy and elegant. Ross Cobb grows this wine at a nursery block of vines his mother planted in 1989, when his parents were just beginning to establish their Coastlands Vineyard. It includes more than 20 selections on their own roots, particularly Jackson Clone 16, one of the more successful at the site (the family later propagated it more extensively in this block). From the crisp details of the delicate fruit to the transformation of the tannins with air, everything points to the coastal complexity this wine will grow into with time.

The Coastlands Vineyard was first planted in 1989 and is located a mere four miles from the Pacific Ocean, having a strong maritime influence. The earthy aromatics take you in with black truffle and peat moss dominating the red fruits and citrus components at the moment. On the mouth, the wine shows a silky texture and unveils a distinctively dark fruit and mineral driven flavor profile. The salinity here is really nice. Delicious now, enjoy this over the next decade or so. Drink 2019-2030.

The 2017 Pinot Noir Coastlands Vineyard Old Firs Block emerges from a block planted in 1989 with Wadenswil and Martini clones. Readers will find a lifted, ethereal Pinot built on grace and understatement. The style is a bit fleeting. The Old Firs is a wine for contemplation. It won’t give up much on its own, rather it is a wine that demands full attention from the reader. Rose petal, lavender and white pepper notes add a beguiling upper register. The 2017 is a total knock out. That’s pretty much all there is to it.

Showing its elegant side in 2017, the nose is filled with dark cherries, raspberries, and the signature Sonoma Coast note of bay laurel. The mid-palate is polished and svelte while giving way to a bright finish of orange rind and Meyer lemon peels. There is a consistently ‘sappy’ quality to the wines from this site, and I very much like the understated framing of this years iteration.

The 2018 Pinot Noir Coastlands Vineyard Old Firs Block comes from vines planted in 1989. Various clones are planted on AXR1 rootstock, including Wadenswil, Pommard and Martini. Despite the rootstock, Ross Cobb notes that the vines are unaffected by phylloxera. “We are very isolated out here, and those old clones are doing fine.” The vines produced a singular rendition in 2018, with alluring scents of pipe tobacco, dried orange peel and dusty earth and a core of pretty raspberry and blueberry fruit. The palate is bright and saline-focused at this early stage, expertly structured with shimmering acidity, silty tannins and an ethereal, spice-laced finish. It’s shy but hints at more to come, so give it 2-3 years in bottle.

The 2018 Pinot Noir Coastlands Vineyard Old Firs Block is a powerful, incisive wine from vines first planted in 1989 with Martini and Wadensvil clones. A powerful, savory wine, the 2018 is going to need a number of years to soften. Dark cherry, tobacco, leather, cedar and spice add layers of nuance, but the 2018 is very much a wine for the cellar. The 60% whole cluster add quite a bit of aromatic complexity as the wine starts to open. Readers should be in no rush.

The 2018 Pinot Noir Diane Cobb Coastlands Vineyard comes from vines planted in 1989. Pale ruby, the 2018 offers both power and delicacy. The nose takes time to evolve from tobacco leaves and dusty earth to wild blackberries and cranberries, citrus peel, rose petal and saline. The palate surprises with its fruit intensity and notably silty, seamless frame, finishing uplifted and very spicy.

\nThe 2018 Ross Cobb’s Pinot Noir Diane Cobb: Coastlands Vineyard is one of the most unique Pinots in all of the Sonoma Coast. It emerges from 1.65-acre parcel planted with a variety of heritage clones, 75% own-rooted, but picked together and co-fermented. Effusive in its aromatics, with striking presence. Time in the glass brings out exotic spice and citrus overtones. I can’t wait to see how it ages.

This wine is a blend of fruit from across the estate, and is a perfect representation of the coastal terroir that is so rare to find in California.

Made with 60% whole clusters, the 2019 Pinot Noir Coastlands Vineyard has a medium ruby color and pure, continually shifting aromas of raspberry preserves, blood orange, sage, Earl Grey tea leaves and forest floor. The palate offers an abundance of silty tannins and surprising intensity of sweet berry fruit for its weight. It offers fine floral accents and finishes with fantastic length and nuance of flavor.

No matter the length of the growing season, nor the size of crop, Old Firs always has a hallmark salinity backed with a ton of power and intensity. The furthest west of all our plantings Old Firs Block is constantly in a deluge of fog and cold Pacific winds. The site speaks clearly year after year through both winemaking and vintage to my absolute delight. This is one for the ages.

Medium ruby, the 2019 Pinot Noir Coastlands Vineyard Old Firs Block has singular scents of conifer, wilted lilac, orange peel and crushed cranberries, with accents of lemon peel and black tea leaves. The palate offers ultra perfumed, delicately styled strawberry and raspberry fruits, a fine, dusty texture, seamless freshness and a long, spicy finish. It’s a delicate expression that will be great for earlier drinking.

Named for an old-growth Douglas fir sitting on the vineyard's edge, the Old Firs block wine is a thing of beauty. Crunchy sea salt aromatics give way to violets, crushed cranberries, juniper berries and pine bough. The palate is finely etched in red fruit and turned earth. Flavours of red berries mingle with crushed stone minerality, bay leaf, pine sap and clove. May 2023.

The 2019 Pinot Noir Diane Cobb Coastlands Vineyard has a medium ruby color and pure, layered scents of raspberry jam, tobacco leaves, lemon peel, pencil shavings and saline. The light-bodied palate is chalky and refreshing, with detailed, mineral-laced berry fruits and a very long finish with expansive floral and spice tones.
