Tucked within several acres of Pinot Noir at Doc’s Ranch, JoAnn’s Block features one acre of Clone 5 Chardonnay. At only the third vintage from Doc’s Ranch, the JoAnn’s Block Chardonnay continues to impress. There is a verve to this wine, with tons of acidity down the mid-palate and a lovely note of salinity on the finish. Doc’s is right next door to Coastlands, only 3-miles from the ocean, making it one of the westerly most planted Chardonnay Vineyards in the Sonoma Coast.

The 2019 Chardonnay Doc’s Ranch Vineyard JoAnn’s Block has intense aromas of white peaches, beeswax, roasted almonds, biscuit and flint. The medium-bodied palate is savory and textural, with a biscuity character that adds breadth and savoriness. It has seamless acidity and a very long finish that offers continually shifting flavors. It’s very energetic and will be long lived in the cellar.

Drinking window: 2023 - 2040
This is a masterclass in Sonoma Coast Chardonnay. Crystalline aromatics of sea foam, lemon verbena, petrichor, grilled lemon peel, and a savoury, smoky edge. The palate is mineral driven, refined, yet edgy. Temperamental yet linear fruit flavours, shifting from apricot flesh to peach skin and grapefruit pith. There is a mineral core of smoky flint, crushed chalk and wet stone. This wine is just showing itself and will become more compelling, if that's possible, in a few years. May 2023.

Doc’s Ranch is named after the road where the original Swan planting resides about two blocks from Coastlands. Similar to the pairing of Emmaline Ann and Monticue, Doc’s and Coastlands are neighbors in both climate and geology. The first 1.5-acre planting of Swan selection was put in the ground in 1998 by Peter Marsh. In the early aughts Bryon Sheets purchased the property from Mr. Marsh and went on to plant an additional 7.8 acres of Pinot and Chardonnay in 2011. In 2017 we split the vineyard into two clonal pairings Pommard & 114 along with Swan & Calera. This kind of granular look at the property and its plant material is a luxury as we learn what this site has to offer.

The 2018 Pinot Noir Doc’s Ranch Pommard & 114 Selection has a pale ruby color and alluring aromas of raspberries, blueberries, mushrooms and dried blue flowers. The youthful delicacy on the nose is foiled by intense, juicy flavors on the palate, which offers silty tannins and exceptional length. This 2018 offers upfront pleasure but will age gracefully in the cellar if you enjoy a Pinot Noir with some bottle age.

The 2018 Pinot Noir Doc’s Ranch Vineyard Pommard 114 Selection is a bit darker and richer than the straight Pommard. Black cherry, spice, licorice and earthy notes infuse the 2018 with so much
character. Broad and ample in feel, the 2018 marries finesse with power. It is another stellar Pinot in this range from Ross Cobb.

The Pommard & 114 Selection from Doc’s Ranch is the most forward of the 2018 Cobb Pinot Noirs, showcasing the power and black-fruited profiles these clones are known to exude. Aromas of red plums and black cherries are stitched together with dark spice notes of cardamom and dried cloves. The palate is dense by Cobb standards, and it will be interesting to follow the integration of this more robust offering over the coming years.

Sitting on the easterly side of the same ridge as our estate Coastlands, Doc’s is protected from the harsh onshore winds from the Pacific. This extra warmth and different clonal selections have resulted in more precise wines that have a ton of electricity on the palate. This wine shows much bigger, darker fruit than the Docs’ from 2017 and will age for a decade without batting an eye.

The 2018 Pinot Noir Doc’s Ranch Swan & Calera Selection is scented of red cherries and cranberries with tones of bitter citrus, tobacco leaves, dried flowers and Angostura bitters. Light-bodied, silty and incredibly fresh, its slim frame holds a surprising amount of pure, crunchy fruits, and it finishes with tremendous length and spicy layers. The Swan clone fruit included in this cuvée comes from vines planted in 1995, and the Calera clones were planted in 2011. It’s another 2018 from the Cobb portfolio that offers both ageability and immediate appeal.

Powerful and structured, with pure, focused minerality to the dried red currant, berry and cherry paste flavors. Sinewy midpalate, with a taut finish that resonates with fresh acidity and tannins as well as savory richness. Best from 2022 through 2027. 277 cases made.

The 2018 Pinot Noir Doc’s Ranch Vineyard Swan & Calera Selection is another fabulous wine in this range that brings together two heritage clones. Swan clone aromatics emerge from time to time, but the Calera tannins are a bit dominant at this stage. Here, too, readers will have to be very patient. There is a lot of wine here, for those who can wait.

In 2017 we released two pinots from Doc’s Ranch, splitting up the clones between the heritage Calera & Swan and the more traditional French Pommard & 114. While I plan on continuing that moving forward, in 2018 I was so intrigued by this newer vineyard I bottled the Calera and Pommard alone. These wines will be a great benchmark for the site moving forward, and forever hold a place in the history of Cobb Wines. This bottling shouldn’t be missed for all our fellow oenophiles of the world.

\"The vines responded to that marginal protection from the coast in 2018, preserving summer in their fruit. It might give you the high of walking through a grassy meadow, the rush of the scent of a rose as it opens to the sun, the cool of an evening in July when wild raspberries and cherries provide the most satisfying and simple dessert. What ties it back to the coast is the texture of the wine, an idealized take on the supple tannins of the stems and the skins of the grapes, a detailed pattern that pinot noir can achieve in close proximity to the Pacific.\"

The 2018 Pinot Noir Doc’s Ranch Vineyard Pommard is sensual, open-knit and so gracious. Bright red cherry fruit, orange peel, spice, mint and sweet pipe tobacco all meld together in a gorgeous, mid-weight Pinot that is so full of immediacy and allure. Readers will have a very hard time keeping their hands off this jewel of a wine. The 40% whole cluster is not at all perceptible.

Tucked within several acres of Pinot Noir at Doc's Ranch, JoAnn's Block features one acre of Clone 5 Chardonnay. There is a verve to this wine, with tons of acidity down the mid-palate and a lovely note of salinity on the finish. Doc's is right next door to Coastlands, only 3-miles from the Ocean, making it one of the westerly most planted chardonnay vineyards in the Sonoma Coast. Intensely perfumed with vibrant aromas of lemon curd, dried apricots, and a touch of floral orange blossom. Quite a serious Chardonnay, in the mouth it’s structured yet giving with a concentration of fruit flavors wrapped around a core of Meyer lemon, Anjou pear, and red apple. Our inaugural Doc’s Ranch: JoAnn’s Block Chardonnay has the structure to age gracefully but with a quick decant now it will sing at the table. Drink over the next 8 – 12 years.

The 2017 Chardonnay Doc's Ranch JoAnn's Block is bright, delicate, and super-refined.  Lemon Peel, white flowers, and white pepper all give the 2017 striking energy and drive.  There is plenty of depth and tons of complexity to balance things out.  Light tropical accents round out the finish.  The 2017 is superb

Doc’s Ranch is named after the road where the original Swan planting resides about two blocks from Coastlands. Similar to the pairing of Emmaline Ann and Monticue, Doc’s and Coastlands are neighbors in both climate and geology. The first 1.5-acre planting of Swan selection was put in the ground in 1998 by Peter Marsh. In the early aughts Bryon Sheets purchased the property from Mr. Marsh and went on to plant an additional 7.8 acres of Pinot and Chardonnay in 2011. In 2017 we split the vineyard into two clonal pairings Pommard & 114 along with Swan & Calera. This kind of granular look at the property and its plant material is a luxury as we learn what this site has to offer.

Immediately accessible and generous, this is the most punchy and forward wine within the Cobb lineup. It is dense and layered on the nose, with notes of black cherries, red plums and black tea. The palate takes a spice-laden turn, showing notes of cardamom and anise within a juicy and succulent texture. Despite the ease of drinking it now, this will be a great long-term cellar candidate.

The 2017 Pinot Noir Doc’s Ranch Vineyard Pommard & 114 Selection is rich, powerful and bombastic. Dark fruit, chocolate, spice and leather add to an impression of brooding gravitas. The style is built on power, but I find less finesse and less overall nuance. Next to the other wines in the range this feels clunky.

Doc’s Ranch is named after the road where the original Swan planting resides about two blocks from Coastlands. Similar to the pairing of Emmaline Ann and Monticue, Doc’s and Coastlands are neighbors in both climate and geology. The first 1.5-acre planting of Swan selection was put in the ground in 1998 by Peter Marsh. In the early aughts Bryon Sheets purchased the property from Mr. Marsh and went on to plant an additional 7.8 acres of Pinot and Chardonnay in 2011. In 2017 we split the vineyard into two clonal pairings Pommard & 114 along with Swan & Calera. This kind of granular look at the property and its plant material is a luxury as we learn what this site has to offer.

The sleeper of the 2017 Cobb lineup. The nose is equal parts dark-fruited, smouldering and floral. The palate shows off notes of rose petals, nectarine skin and nutmeg. It feels like a coiled spring at the moment; a svelte and complete wine lurking just underneath a currently restrained elegance.

Another addition to the range, the 2017 Pinot Noir Doc’s Ranch Vineyard Swan & Calera Selection is delicate, nuanced and full of character. Sweet floral notes, red cherry, mint, cedar and rose petal all grace this exquisite, beautifully layered Pinot Noir. Energetic and bright, the Swan & Calera Selection has a ton to offer, but it needs time to be at its best. Today, it feels a bit compact.
