This was the first bottling from the Emmaline Ann vineyard, which tends to produce a more delicate and silky wine compared to Coastlands. The wine spent 16 months in French oak, 30% new. At first pour, the nose is loaded with aromas of white chocolate, cocoa powder and malt. Over several hours the wine became sappy, dense, and fruit-driven. It’s a truly multi-faceted wine, and a favourite from this tasting. 166 cases produced. Drinking Window 2019 – 2025.

“Focus On California’s North Coast”

\n

Bright ruby. Sexy red and black fruits on the nose, with suave floral and mineral qualities adding complexity. Deep in flavor but lively, offering sweet raspberry and blackcurrant flavors and a late note of candied rose. The rose note repeats on the finish, which is pure, sappy and very long. These grapes were picked at relatively low 21.9° Brix, according to Ross Cobb.

Another yield-affected wine from the 2011 vintage, I found this to be the most delicate in the tasting. It has an enthralling nose of potting soil, balsa wood and sage, with flavours of Rainier cherry, strawberry and watermelon rind on the palate, with a subtle dried-fruit quality on the finish. It seems the extended time in barrel has helped to enhance the subtleties concealed in this wine. 75 cases made. 28 months in French oak barrels, 30% new. Drinking Window 2019 – 2025.

Winemaker’s notes: An elegant Pinot Noir from my favorite vineyard in the Freestone Valley. A beautiful release, and a lovely expression of this wonderful vineyard.

The 2012 Pinot Noir Emmaline Ann Vineyard has a lovely purity and translucence to it, although elements of reduction are presently masking the fruit. Cranberry, blood orange, spice, chalk and white pepper add nuance on the tightly wound finish.

This has a focussed and slightly reductive nose of dried roses, gunpowder and matchbook, while orange zest and cranberry carry the palate through to the finish. It’s a beautiful, understated expression of Emmaline Ann that keeps you coming back to the glass. 200 cases produced 22 months spent in French oak, 35% new. Drinking Window 2020 – 2025.

Once again, translucence and transparency are some of the main signatures in the 2013 Pinot Noir Emmaline Ann Vineyard. Orange peel, autumn leaves, rose water and a host of exotic spices lift from the glass in a weightless, gracious Pinot Noir that speaks to subtlety above all else. Interestingly, the Emmaline Ann is the wine in this range that is most similar across 2012 and 2013, which suggests the site has a strong personality that perhaps dominates over vintage.

After tasting several older Emmaline Ann Pinots, I love the subtle reduction that tends to be found early on, and which will bring a lovely dimension down the road for those with patience. This 2014 has a very fragrant and racy nose of lavender and underbrush, and there’s an intriguing mixture of savoury and saline elements here- my immediate thought was ‘a cucumber becoming a pickle’. 310 cases produced. 22 months in French oak barrels, 30% new.

I wasn’t sure ‘infusive’ was an actual word when I wrote it down after tasting this astonishing pinot noir made by Ross Cobb. In fact, it is a word: ‘Having the power or quality of infusion,’ according to my musty old two-volume Webster’s. This comes from a foggy, shady site planted on sandy Goldridge soil, not far from Sebastopol – and the wine does seem to infuse the senses with an aromatic fog that you can almost walk around in, noting a spray of juniper, a lattice full of roses, the cool moisture of the soil. There’s a tightness to the structure that will reward aging, but the impression is one of inner strength rather than weight.

Ross Cobb has as much experience with Sonoma Coast vineyards as anybody, having worked at Williams Selyem, Flowers, and Hirsch, all notable Sonoma Coast producers. Ross, like Jadot’s legendary winemaker, Jacques Lardière who is currently making Jadot’s Oregon Pinot Noir, favors picking that grape earlier in the New World’s warmer vineyards (at least compared to Burgundy) to preserve secondary aromas and flavors that are essential to the character of the wine. For Cobb, the result is a spectacularly aromatic and alluring trio of Pinot Noir all of which weigh-in under 13.4 percent stated alcohol. The Emmaline Ann Pinot Noir (12.8 percent) is the real thing, showing the near magical combination of flavor without weight. Light on the palate, it makes a lasting impression on your brain with its combination of delicate fruitiness and savory herbal notes. Velvety tannins and perfect acidity amplify its elegance.

The youngest wine present at the tasting, it spent 22 months in French oak, 30% new. It displays constantly evolving aromas of sandalwood, petrichor and dried sage, with raspberry and grapefruit on the palate and a firm but poised spine. There’s a hang-time of sorts on the finish, which takes a few seconds to really kick in with its black cherries and red plums. The steadfastness of the Cobb release schedule is again to be appreciated here. Drinking Window 2025 – 2040.

The 2015 Pinot Noir Emmaline Ann Vineyard is wonderfully lifted and perfumed in this vintage, with a bit more fleshiness than is normal because of the extreme conditions of the year. Cedar, sweet tobacco, mint and dried cherry are all laced throughout. Hints of orange peel, cranberry and sage add lift. The Emmaline Ann is always the most delicate and perfumed of Ross Cobb’s Pinots, as it is once again in 2015. Cobb fermented the 2015 with 40% whole clusters and gave the wine 22 months in barrel.

Located in the Sonoma Coast AVA, the Emmaline Anne Vineyard is planted to Dijon clone 115 and 777. The wine begins with intense aromas of black truffle crudo, cigar ash, and wild blackberry cobbler with a touch of citrus rind. The palate has a wonderful viscosity and texture, leading to dark fruit and citrus rind driven flavors that connect with beautiful earthy undertones. Highly complex and downright delicious, this terroir driven effort is drinking marvelously right now. Drink 2019-2030.

The 2016 Pinot Noir Emmaline Ann Vineyard is pale ruby in color with a singular nose of tart red cherries, black berries, cranberry and strawberry aromas that open to a wicked line of crushed rock minerality plus notes of smoke, earth and bitter peel. Light to medium-bodied, savory black and red fruits wrapped with layers of smoky spice fill the mouth. It’s framed by firm, grainy tannins and juicy acidity to lift the long, layered finish.

The 2016 Emmaline-Ann Vineyard is dark and powerful, with more of a distinct sense of whole cluster savoriness and to match its insistent structural feel. Pine, mint, black cherry, citrus, licorice and dried flowers add aromatic intrigue to this dark, beautifully layered Pinot Noir. This is another stellar wine from Ross Cobb.

Pure and vibrant on the nose, showing notes of lavender, rose water and conifer. The weightless texture typical of this site is here in spades, with notes of ripe red cherries and cranberries on the palate. A woodsy, dried-mushroom note on the finish makes this a slightly more savoury iteration of the always-beautiful Emmaline Ann Vineyard.

The 2017 Pinot Noir Emmaline-Ann Vineyard is another stellar wine in this range. Bold, rich and explosive, the 2017 possesses tremendous depth and nuance. Black cherry, plum, menthol, licorice and sage infuse the 2017 with tons of character. The 2017 is marked by a real sense of vertical energy and statuesque beauty. The 50% whole clusters are not especially evident. What a wine!

The 2019 Pinot Noir Emmaline Ann Vineyard was made with 50% whole clusters and matured for 22 months in 40% new French oak. It is delicate and broody on the nose at this stage, with a core of raspberry fruit and accents of saline, seaweed, cracked pepper and violet. The light-bodied palate is delicate, grainy and fresh, with layer after layer of detailed fruits and a latent finish that hints at more to come as this matures in bottle.
