The hillside vineyard displays ripe aromas more common in pinot noir from the Russian River Valley. This Occidental vineyard has fruit aromas of blood orange, cherry cola with a creamy, luscious and spicy impression with lively acidity.

“The 2007 has an amazing combination of forest floor, maitake mushroom, tart cherry, and a really distinct rose petal floral note. It is beautifully straddling a savory and fruity line at the moment. There’s still a tannic grip, with enough mouth watering acidity to back it up. An extremely interesting wine that challenges the conception of what aged New World Pinot can look like. We open countless bottles of old California Pinot at SingleThread, but this wine strikes me as wholly unique. I’ve never tasted anything quite like it. The combination of earth, mushroom, rose petals and elevated tannins and acidity is very reminiscent of a fine Nebbiolo.”

Red berry liqueur and potpourri on the nose, with complicating notes of Asian spices and smoky minerals. Sappy, sharply red fruit and floral pastille flavors show no rough edges, with zesty minerality adding energy and cut. Very precise and showing impressive depth, with strong finishing power and a persistent echo of raspberry.

A wine of pure impact. An intense, forward offering, the 2010 stands out for its overt juiciness for a Cobb Pinot, but there is a striking purity and inner perfume in the flavors. It will be interesting to see where the 2010 goes over the coming years. Today it is surprisingly big, rich and structured.

“Savory like the 2007 but in a wholly different way, more geared toward kombu and orange peel. The 2011 is much softer in structure, without the 2007’s tannic structure. It’s definitely in its prime drinking window now. The most elegant and prettiest of the lineup. The tannins are fully integrated, giving it a soft and silky texture. The finish is all sea salt and nori in the most incredible way. This is a wine I would show others as a textbook example of the complexities and savory deliciousness of coastal California Pinot. While it is of course delicious on its own, it would really shine with an umami rich dish with mushrooms or seaweed to flex its incredible pairing capacity. This is the type of wine I only dream of having in large enough quantities to pour day in and day out in a restaurant.”

Jack Hill is a small, 2-acre vineyard in the Freestone Valley, hidden in the trees and rolling hills of western Sonoma Coast. The fruit from here is savory with lots of baking spices and turned earth notes across the wine. The fruit is bright but backed by a very old world and Burgundian streak to the flavor profile.

The 2012 Pinot Noir Jack Hill Vineyard is a very pretty, perfumed wine. Dried cherry, rose petal, mint and anise grace the palate. This is an especially light to medium-bodied Pinot that emphasizes floral an spice notes, while the fruit is pushed more into the background. The 2012 was done with 35% whole clusters and spent 22 months in barrel.

The highlight in this set of wines, Cobb’s 2014 Pinot Noir Jack Hill is vivid, nuanced and finely sketched, with all the elements in the right place. Nothing in particular stands out, instead, it is the wine’s balance that speaks with great eloquence. Lifted, precise and focused, the 2014 offers striking interplay of fruit, acid and structure. The reductive character that is often present in these wines is nowhere to be found in the Jack Hill. In my view, that is a good thing. This is a gorgeous wine from Ross Cobb. The 2014 was done with 40% whole clusters.

“Surprisingly, the 2015 is more approachable right away than the 2014. Really incredible mix of pine/forest floor and spruce tip aromas and flavors that I didn’t see on the other wines, mixed with underripe cherry. Really soft texture and silky tannin. While I think this will age very well, it’s almost hard to not want to drink this right away because it’s so damn good now. Give it a few years to develop some more umami notes to go along with the herbal tinge and pine resin and this will be absolutely incredible.”

Ross Cobb’s 2015 Pinot Noir Jack Hill is deep and powerful. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the 2015 won’t be ready to drink anytime soon, as the firm tannins need time to soften. This is an especially powerful, tightly wound Pinot for the year. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, mint, dried flowers and licorice overtones open up, but only with great reluctance. The interplay of fruit richness and structure makes for a compelling wine, but readers need to be patient. The wait will be worth it, as this is a stunning wine by any measure.

Ross Cobb captures the freshness of the Pacific coast in this light, transparent red that feels clean and brisk. Energy drives its bright-cherry and blood-orange flavors, lasting on salty, savory spice.

A very fine Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, the (2015) Jack Hill is an elegant, aromatic wine that is full bodied, and smoothly textured, with good balance, and complex aromas/flavors (plum, cherry, rose petal, herbs, black tea, oak). Still a bit tannic; needs aging. Exceptional.

The Jack Hill Vineyard spans a mere two acres, located in the freestone valley and surrounded by old oak and Douglass Fir trees. The nose takes on wonderfully earthy terroir with red fruits and citrus rind that round out the aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine has a silky mouthfeel and beautiful texture. Powerful and intense, with a surprising viscosity and tension, the wine shows blood orange, forest floor, wet stone and red cherry candy flavors. Sinfully good now, the wine will cellar well for a decade or more. Drink 2019-2033.

From a cold, steep site, Jack Hill is fleshy, spicy and integrated, brimming promisingly with a wealth of dark cherry, strawberry and blood orange. A tease of cola and cardamom give it a powerful middle of nuanced richness around a body of firm integrated tannin.

The pale ruby colored 2016 Pinot Noir Jack Hill Vineyard is scented of pomegranate liqueur, Bing cherry and cranberry with exotic spices, lilac, bergamot, wet leaves and earth. Light to medium-bodied, the silky texture segues into firm, grainy tannins, and juicy acidity provides support for the concentrated flavor layers and the long, layered finish. Outstanding.

Ross Cobb’s 2016 Jack Hill Vineyard is gorgeous. Soft, pliant and inviting, the 2016 has so much to offer. Bright floral notes meld into a core of sweet red berry fruit in this nuanced, silky Pinot Noir, with floral, blood orange, chalk and mint notes that add invigorating freshness. The 50% whole clusters are impeccably balanced.
