An addition to the range, the 2014 Chardonnay Mariani is a total knockout. Translucent and deceptively understated in the glass, the 2014 boasts superb energy and tension in one of the more finessed expressions of Wente clone Chardonnay I have tasted. White flowers and citrus notes abound in this striking, precise Chardonnay from Ross Cobb.

Mariani is a small 1-acre jewel located just inland from Tomales Bay in far Western Petaluma — one of the coldest parts of the Sonoma Coast. The vineyard is planted to an old Wente selection of Chardonnay that produces exceptionally small berries with intense flavors and brilliant acidity.

High-toned floral aromas and flavors mark this memorable, elegant and delicately textured wine, buoyant in acidity and fresh hits of tangerine, lime and a tease of caramel. The structure is impressive, suggesting potential aging, and the wine has an undeniable hint of wet stone-like mineral that lingers.

The 2016 Chardonnay Mariani Vineyard is a fabulous wine that deftly balances phenolic intensity with a real sense of translucent beauty. Lemon confit, sage, mint and wild flowers all take shape in the glass, but it is the wine’s pure sense of expression and nuance that make the strongest impression. Ross Cobb gave the 2016 Chardonnay 20 months in barrel, which is on the long side for California. That approach works beautifully here.
