\"From the legendary Martha’s Vineyards at the base of the Mayacamas in Western Oakville near To Kalon. There’s a special quality in the air around Martha’s Vineyard because of the towering Eucalyptus trees along the eastern parameter where the Martha’s Vineyard clone takes on some of those minty notes. Bay laurel freshness leads from the glass, and the palate showcases full development of flavour with crunchy red berry fruit, spice, menthol, eucalyptus, and a foundation of ultra fine tannins and firm spine of acidity. The wine is just gorgeous. Flavour-packed and expressive, it is likely going to outlive most of us. It is a wine you can drink 90 to 100 years from now, mark my words. You can enjoy it now for its mineral intensity, its acid freshness, and pure fruit flavours, but it's a wine you should have with a meal if you attempt to drink it anytime before 2050 (after that, maybe just enjoy it on its own).\" - Jonathan Cristaldi

\"The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Martha’s Vineyard is a classic wine off this site. It has such a distinctive aromatic signature, and then tremendous depth that just builds in the glass. Succulent dark cherry, pomegranate, spice and mint. The 2021 is a seriously beautiful, regal Cabernet.\" - Antonio Galloni

","tech-copy":"Martha’s Vineyard wines are made from a proprietary Cabernet Sauvignon clone with vines in their second generation at over 30 years of age, setting small berries with an intensely purple hue, deeply concentrated flavors, and a distinctive minty aroma that is part of this wine’s signature.
\nThis bottling hails from a parcel in the heart of Western Oakville, lying on a prime cut of the deep alluvial fan between Harlan Estate and To Kalon. Only the best blocks are selected for this single-vineyard designation, which is a commitment for all Heitz single vineyards.

Farmed and vinified exclusively by Heitz Cellar since 1966, Martha’s Vineyard continues to set the standard for classic, ageworthy Cabernet Sauvignon from the Napa Valley. America’s first single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, and a benchmark to this day.

\"Fruit is from Trailside Vineyard in the eastern foothills of Rutherford, just north of Mumm and south of Conn Creek. Heitz purchased the initial portion of the property in 1986 and later expanded the estate in 2019 with the acquisition of a 34-hectare parcel and the incorporation of a contiguous 20 hectares to the south, formerly known as Wildwood, creating a fully contiguous vineyard site. The wine shows pure black fruit and graphite notes, with a rusticity to the tannins reminiscent of fine Barolo, infused with dried wild herbs and spices. Those building tannins carry through a lengthy, full-bodied palate that remains expressive, fresh, and beautifully structured through the finish. It has the loamy earth quality of the 2021 vintage in spades. Aged in upright casks for the first nine months of its life, followed by maturation in 90–95% new French oak for the remainder of its barrel ageing. Winemaker Brittany Sherwood employs cool fermentations, early pressing, and an extended élevage, noting that Heitz also utilises a small amount of Limousin oak foudre, which typically requires longer ageing for full integration.\" - Jonathan Cristaldi

impression from this wine is a beautiful florality, with red roses and violets accenting a vibrant black cherry perfume. Fresh, vibrant purple plums join on the palate, with top notes of mint and dusty chaparral. This wine hangs together beautifully, with juicy acidity supporting a medium-full body with polished tannin. This wine is drinking gorgeously now but will continue to improve 20 years or more.
98 Points, Decanter
“The fruit, aromatic precision and focus of this wine are something to experience. Compact, with firm, taut, mineral-rich tannins and gorgeously pure cherry fruit, underpinned by graphite minerality and fragrant violets with white pepper nuances, and showing stunning purity of fruit on the lengthy finish.”

carried on fine, firm tannins toward a long and savory finish. It is beautiful now with a decant, yet its real gift is patience. This wine is always crafted with the same intention as its inaugural 1961 vintage: lush fruit that makes it easy to enjoy upon release, but the structure to age for decades in the cellar.
“Beautiful. Sensual, open-knit and inviting…will be impossible to resist in its youth.”

The Ink Grade Vineyard was purchased by Joe Heitz in 1989, though this is only the second vintage that Heitz Cellar has produced a single-vineyard wine from this Howell Mountain estate. 2019 began with abundant winter rainfall, allowing the soils to maintain late soil moisture, giving the vines a fantastic start to the growing season followed by a long warm summer that was even and consistent. The incredible growing season led to wines with bright acidity, great structure with soft tannins, and brilliant, distinct aromatics. the northwestern corner of the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. This site takes its name from an abundance of quartzite found throughout the bedrock and upper layers of the soil. This material provides a tension and energy seldom seen in Chardonnay from the Napa Valley. The parcel sits at one of the northernmost locations, still capable of producing elegant and balanced Chardonnay. It is often blanketed with a thick layer of fog throughout the late evening and early morning, helping to temper the Mediterranean climate of the Napa Valley.

\"This single-vineyard Heitz Chardonnay from Quartz Creek in the Oak Knoll AVA was aged on fine lees with monthly stirring and filtered before bottling, with no malolactic fermentation. The Quartz Creek vineyard, formerly known as Triere, was one of the original sites that comprised the Burgess estate. Crisp, fragrant, and orchard-fruit-driven, the wine shows white-flower notes, crushed Marcona almond, and wet riverstone mineral character, infused with bracingly fresh acid tension.\" - Jonathan Cristaldi

Recommendation","content":"Completely surrounded by oak woodlands and part of the St. Helena AVA, our Spring Valley Vineyard sits next to the historic Stone Cellar and winery where Heitz Cellar has made wine for over six decades. These vines of Cabernet Sauvignon are planted on a rolling knoll with an incredible aspect and elevation. The west-facing slope, just below BOND's \"Quella,\" receives great exposure from the warm afternoon sun and the incline allows for well-drained soil, giving a unique complexity to the wine and producing concentrated Cabernet while still being balanced and elegant.
\nEmbracing the history and winemaking legacy of this land, we are proud to present our inaugural vintage of a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from our Spring Valley Vineyard. Harvested in the early morning hours of October 2nd, the 2019 SVV Cabernet Sauvignon brings in the unique forest quality of the surrounding wilderness with an essence of pine while still being balanced with bright red fruit.

Located at the base of the Vaca mountain range along the eastern edge of Rutherford, the Trailside Vineyard captures the heart of Rutherford terroir, vinified in our classic Heitz style. The well-drained volcanic soil of this parcel allows it to convey the essence of the growing season, year after year. The long, warm summer of 2019 was even and consistent and marked by the classic, cool foggy mornings that help our vineyards maintain their vibrant and expressive characteristics. The incredible growing season led to wines with bright acidity, great structure with soft tannins, and brilliant, distinct aromatics. Aged for four years in our cellar followed by one year in bottle, this wine was created with your immediate enjoyment in mind and will continue to evolve over the next 20+ years.

\"From a site adjacent to Beckstoffer's Georges III, Heitz's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Trailside Vineyard is a strong effort, boasting ample cedar, ripe cherries, gentle herbal complexities (think bay leaf and sage) and a delicate dusty-earth character. It's medium- to full-bodied and silky in texture, with a long finish lined by fine-grained tannins wrapped around a core of crisp acidity.\"

Hidden in the shadows of the Mayacamas Mountains on the alluvial fan of western Oakville, Martha’s Vineyard embodies the pedigree of being named the first single vineyard-designated wine in Napa Valley. Farmed and vinified exclusively by Heitz Cellar over the last 50 years, Martha's Vineyard continues to set the standard for classic, ageworthy Cabernet Sauvignon from the Napa Valley. \"Heitz's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard is one of the best vintages I can remember tasting. Loaded with blackcurrants, it also carries hints of camphor and mocha on the nose, while the medium- to full-bodied palate is rich and concentrated, and the vibrant, long-lasting finish is framed by oodles of soft tannins. Readers may want to note that beginning in 2025, grapes from this historic 30-acre site may be sold to other producers, although Heitz is expected to continue to make this bottling from \"their\" portions of the vineyard.\"
97 Points, Vinous
“The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Martha’s Vineyard is such a classic wine. The bouquet alone is a dead giveaway. Soaring floral and savory top notes make a strong opening statement. Medium in body and pliant, with terrific persistence, the 2019 is dripping with the essence of site. This is an archetype of Napa Valley classicism with modern purity of red fruit.”
- Antonio Galloni, December 2024
96 Points, Wine Spectator
“This red brims with dark currant, cherry and loganberry fruit, but you have to work through a lush swath of menthol to get there, all while notes of sweet tobacco and a hint of loam run underneath. Fine-grained, with a lingering twang of iron, this has all it requires for a lengthy cellar run, yet needs to meld a bit more.”

They learned under legends like Fred and Eleanor McCrea from Stony Hill Vineyard up on Spring Mountain. With those ambitious goals in mind, we carry on their legacy through the expression of the Quartz Creek Vineyard Chardonnay. Situated at the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains and blanketed by the morning fog from the Petaluma Gap, this site continues to produce our most elegant and refined expression of Chardonnay. Always sustainably farmed and vinified in the classic style to evoke the purest characteristics of the land where the grapes are grown.

Our first harvest from this parcel produced beautiful fruit, which became a wine that is lovely, soft, mouthfilling and round in the mouth, with aromas of red cherries and fennel accented by faint notes of dried chanterelle, underbrush, and iron, and a suggestion of pennyroyal that is so intriguing. It’s a stunning debut worthy of the Heitz Cellar mark.

\nThe “moon dust” volcanic soils in this woodland parcel gave a Cabernet Sauvignon in 2021 that is lively, lithe, and packing a lot of self-assured power on the palate. Perfumes of raspberry, red cherry, and honey emerge on the attack and faint notes of cocoa and caramel decorate its inner-mouth perfumes through the finish. Just 8 barrels produced.
