","pounds-per-case":null,"winemaker-notes":"Our purchase of the historic Rossi vineyard in 2007 gave our family the opportunity to draw this connection. There were still a handful of historic blocks at Rossi, surrounded by the Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. We made a concerted effort not only to preserve those blocks, but also to augment them with new plantings of other historic varieties: ultra-rare Charbono with its plummy fruit, Carignane and Petite Sirah with their density and tannin, and Mourvèdre with its spice and length on the palate. The Heritage block sits in front of the iconic water tower at Rossi, and is a living reminder of our link to previous generations of winegrowers, as well as a testament to our belief that the greatest wines in California have always been the result of someone making good on a crazy idea.

A Brief History
","merchandise-detail-image-2-text":"One of the coolest parts about growing grapes and making wine in California is the presence of “field blends”—wines made from several different varieties growing alongside one another in the same field. These blends are usually unique to a given site, and often consist of grapes that are so obscure as be nearly extinct in the modern wine world. Each of these wines tell a unique story about the place in which they’re grown, and form a delicious connection to the long history of experimentation and risk-taking that are the essence of making wine in California.

We last made a Syrah in 2001—opening up those wines now reminds us of why this misunderstood grape is so much fun, and gives us confidence that the ’23 will also go the distance.

","members-only-wine":false,"legacy-product-type":null,"bundle-picture-notes":null,"vineyard-description":"Almost all vineyards are beautiful to me—but a few stand out and are permanently etched in my memory. Many years ago, Tony Truchard drove me up the perilous switchbacks in his rickety Ford Bronco to the top of the highest knoll on his property to show me his newest planting: a block of Syrah on a small patch of volcanic soil. When I saw these baby vines clinging to the steep slope, the soil peppered with chunks of tufa (compressed volcanic ash), I knew I needed to someday make a barrel or two of wine from this spectacular site.
\nTony is, of course, the man behind the fabulous vineyard from which we have sourced our Chardonnay since 1985. The decomposed shale and sandstone soils of our Chardonnay block, together with the volcanic series of the Syrah, represent just two facets of this complex ranch, which is itself a microcosm of the diversity within Carneros as a region. Long-time members of the Fellowship will recall the black cherry-scented Merlots from Truchard, which we often bottle separately, drawn from the high-elevation clay-silt loams at the northern end of the property. It is a special vineyard, where terroir announces itself through the wines, defying expectations.
\nThe Syrah block had been under contract for many years to another winery whose winemaker was as passionate about the block as I am. When that winery sold out to private equity, the PE folks came to realize that they wanted nothing to do with great Syrah, and the fruit became available at the last moment. Tony called, and we said yes. While it clocks in just a touch above our normal alcohol and ripeness levels, the ’23 is nevertheless packed with the black pepper spice, silky texture and high-tone aromatics of this noble and enigmatic grape.

2024 was an auspicious year for the launch of the Charbono. Perfect ripening conditions and a healthy, balanced crop gave us the best-looking fruit we’d seen in our 16 years of working with the variety. Two tons of the Charbono were selected from the eastern side of the block for this micro-lot fermentation. The grapes were destemmed and crushed to two open-top concrete tanks, with three punch-downs daily over the course of a 10 day fermentation. After pressing off, the wine was aged in neutral puncheons for 7 months, requiring neither racking, fining nor filtration before being bottled. The ’24 is plummy and spicy, brimming with the variety’s characteristic mint and pine needle aromas that lend complexity and tension. Charbono wines are deeply colored (its Savoyard name is Corbeau, or “raven”), but its structure and body are nimble and refreshingly drinkable. Will it go 50 years? I’m excited to find out.

\nCharbono is very flexible. It shines with a roast chicken and some summer squash, which are a perfect match for its lively fruit and piney earthiness, but I’ve been wowed by Charbono with grilled salmon and tomatoes. Ideal service is in a Pinot-style glass at cool cellar temperature: 59F/15C.

","merchandise-detail-image-2-text":"Of the many varieties of grapes planted across California, there are few as rare as Charbono. Originally from what is now the Savoie region of France, Charbono emigrated to California in the late 19th century but never spread widely, and today only occupies about 80 acres of ground across the whole state. Oddly, nearly half of what is left exists in Napa, largely due to the influence of the Charbono wines produced by Inglenook from the 1950s into the 1980s, whose ability to age have inspired others and rescued the grape from being a mere historical footnote. In 2007, my dad and I were able to taste a pristine example—the 1964—and that one bottle inspired us in 2008 to plant 2 acres of it at our Rossi vineyard. This wasn’t exactly in line with the advice we got from our financial team, but we were dedicated to chasing what we had tasted in the ’64: intensity without weight, plummy fruit fully integrated with minty earthiness, and above all the sense of a wine that was completely Napa without conforming to the big-bold Napa red hegemony. 100% certified organic and dry farmed, planted 1947. The lone soil type is the classic gravelly loam of the Pleasanton series. Yep, it’s on Cab ground. If we were a different winery, these vines would be Cabernet, and we’d be 111 cases closer to our first helicopter. Alas.

A Brief History
","merchandise-detail-image-2-text":"When we began farming and purchasing the grapes from the Rossi Ranch in the 1990s, in addition to blocks of Cabernet, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc that fit neatly into our existing wines, there were a handful of historic old-vine blocks still hanging around that forced us to get creative. Much of this was due to Louise Rossi, the owner and guardian spirit of the ranch; one did not simply rip out a block of vines on Louise’s time—or dime. Thus, an old stand of Riesling became the inspiration for the Leapfrögmilch, and two parcels of Valdiguié—known invariably as Napa Gamay to old-timers in the valley—became the core of our new rosé program.
\nAfter purchasing the ranch in 2007, we began planting various parts of the ranch that were fallow, focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc; that effort, finally completed in 2020, has enabled the existence of our marquee Estate Cabernet. But we never had the heart to rip out the old blocks; we’re just kind of weird that way. Instead, the Riesling found new neighbors with the Mourvèdre and Charbono of the Heritage blend, and the Valdiguié continued to play a role in the Heritage and the rosé—until 2020, when it made its debut as a varietal red wine.
\nRossi has two blocks of Valdiguié, one planted in 1954, and the other in 1947. The health of both blocks had declined over the years, and both were assigned to me as my first pruning project upon joining the vineyard team in 2013, with a goal of rebuilding their vigor. After years of effort, the 1947 planting—always the stronger of the two—was the first to make the cut for inclusion in the Heritage blend, and it is the basis for this special bottling. These are the oldest vines we farm at Frog’s Leap and are quite simply living symbols of the fun that I have making wine.

","pounds-per-case":36.1,"winemaker-notes":"The block of Cabernet Franc at Chavez-Leeds, planted in 1989, has been an essential component of Frog’s Leap Cabernet wines since our move to Rutherford, helping to provide lift and tension to our Cabernet Sauvignon. As this block has gained in age, we’ve been increasingly tempted to bottle a little bit of it on its own to show off the nuances of this multitalented grape. Rich cranberry and red plum aromas walk in lockstep with Franc’s classic, powerful top note of fig leaf, dried sage and dusty earth. I’ve always loved how this top note exists in harmony with a rich, resonant and sneaky powerful palate, adding density and intensity without upsetting the wine’s balance. Cab Franc is what a naysayer would call “green”—a term used to mark non-compliant wines during the steroids era of Napa Cabernet, when a red wine’s only virtue lay in how opulently fruity it was. By contrast, I believe that this savory, herbal character is essential, and one of the most terroir-sensitive elements of great Cabernet Sauvignon, Cab Franc and Merlot wines from Napa Valley. Give it air, give it time in the glass, and share it with great food and great company.

A Brief History
","merchandise-detail-image-2-text":"In 1926, with Prohibition in full swing, Apolonio and Emily Chavez moved their young family from the East Bay town of Alameda up to the Napa Valley.
\nWith no market for the zinfandel and Petite sirah grapes on their newly acquired 37 acres, they chose to replace the vines with walnut trees. It would be 30 years later with a second generation in charge before there would be more grapes than walnuts planted on this beautiful Rutherford Bench property. Another 40 years later, with the third and fourth generations of the Chavez-Leeds family now in charge, this land was finally beginning to fully realize its potential.
\nIn many ways the story of this remarkable vineyard—and the five generations of the Chavez-Leeds family that have farmed it—is the story of the Napa Valley itself. The hopes and dreams of generations of families, enchanted by this magical place that we call Napa, have survived the challenges of world events, market booms and busts and the inherent risks of a running and keeping a family farming business.
\nOf all the fortunate things that have happened to Frog’s Leap over our thirty plus years very few can top our relationship with the Chavez-Leeds family and their remarkable grapes that have been a part of Frog’s Leap wines since 1989.
