[The Cobb Pinot Noir Rice-Spivak Vineyard 2007 has] good ripeness as well as a hint of menthol, yet the mostly red berry fruit and violet aromas are cool, pure and airy before sliding gracefully into fresh and energetic middle weight flavors that possess just a hair more overall depth and excellent length on the dusty and persistent finish. This is terrific and the balance is impeccable. Lovely juice.

Deep ruby. Brooding dark berry and cherry-cola aromas are complemented by bright mineral and floral notes. Slow to open, offering bitter cherry and blackcurrant flavors and a late note of licorice. The finish repeats the cola and licorice notes and clings nicely. This is the most backward of this set, and in need of cellaring.

Bright red. Sexy aromas of candied red berries, cherry-cola, anise and fresh bay, with a hint of potpourri that gains strength with air. Juicy, penetrating raspberry and cherry flavors show increasing spiciness and weight as the wine opens in the glass. The finish strongly echoes the raspberry note and lingers with impressive clarity and persistence. This is balanced to age.

The 2011 Pinot Noir Rice Spivak Vineyard has a pale ruby color and takes time to open to aromas of saline, dried red berries, iodine and wafts of floral potpourri. The palate is medium-bodied and firm, with a slow flourish of spicy red fruits, and it finishes long, delicate and lifted. It’s a very pretty, mature expression of Rice Spivak.

The 2012 Pinot Noir Rice-Spivak Vineyard is deep, pliant and intense, with good mid-palate depth and intensity. Dark red and purplish berry notes, spice, new leather, sage and tobacco meld together in a supple, inviting Pinot endowed with a real sense of weight and gravitas. This parcel is planted with the distinctive Swan clone of Pinot Noir. Cobb used 50% whole clusters here. There is plenty of potential here.

The 2013 Pinot Noir Rice-Spivak Vineyard is a bit more delicate and not as fruit-forward as it can be. Readers should expected an understated, laid-back Pinot that leans more towards restraint than the pliancy that is typical of this site. Sweet red berry and rose petal notes begin to emerge in the glass, but the 2013 remains a touch compact and classically austere in style. My impression is that this fruit may have come in on the early side, as the flavors and textures feel not fully developed. At the same time, these wines have a way of blossoming in bottle. It will be interesting to see if that happens here.

Like the Emmaline Ann recommended here, this comes from a vineyard planted on Goldridge soil near Sebastopol; this site has a bit more volcanic material and a cool northern exposure. While many coastal pinots from northern California have a foresty aspect to them, this wine seems particularly leafy and delicate, with a cool fruit character that feels as refreshing as iced tea – you can almost imagine beads of condensation on the glass. It’s a touch lean right now, needing some age or an hour in a decanter to allow its bright red fruit tones to emerge and throw a layer of silky finesse over its savory spine.

Ross Cobb’s 2014 Pinot Noir Rice-Spivak Vineyard is rich, deeply layered and inviting. Exotic spice and red-toned fruit make a strong first impression. The inclusion of 60% whole clusters adds lovely aromatic presence throughout. If opened young, the 2014 needs a bit of air. Like many of these Pinots, the Rice-Spivak has a top layer of reduction that needs to dissipate for the wine to be at its most expressive.

Cobb’s 2014 Rice-Spivak Vineyard Pinot Noir (13.3 percent) is more floral and opulent compared to their Emmaline Ann bottling at this stage, but still impeccably balanced. Again, the flavors dance across the palate, leaving you wondering how such intensity can be so light. It’s another dazzling Pinot Noir, reflecting the locale of the vineyard and the talent of the winemaker. The polished tannins simply add to the wine’s elegance.

Aromas of black tea, bergamot and tangerine zest jump out of the glass with deep red cherry and fresh red Fuji apple notes. Earthy hints of shiitake mushroom and Asian five spice also emerge. The 2015 Pinot Noir Rice-Spivak Vineyard is one of the most vivid, nuanced wines in this range. Bright, layered and exquisitely beautiful, the 2015 is really singing today. Hints of rose petal, mint and dried flowers add shades of expression throughout. This beautifully sculpted Pinot is a jewel of a wine from Ross Cobb. The 2015 was done with 40% whole clusters and spent 22 months in oak.

Bergamot tea and mandarin orange zest aromas emerge with black cherry and fresh red Fuji apple notes along with earthy hints of mushroom and Asian five spice. On the palate it’s finely textured with vibrant acidity and additional supporting flavors of lavender, pine and truffle. Quite drinkable at this young stage with tannins present but not overpowering.

This is a beautifully made wine, fully able to capture the beauty of coastal influence in a great vintage. Spicy and floral, with a delicate entry, this has nuanced and entangled elements of wild raspberry, lavender, Asian spice and foraged mushroom. A stemmy earthy undercurrent adds energy and continued freshness on the long-lasting finish of forest.

The Rice-Spivak vineyard, owned by Russell Rice, is a six acre vineyard located in the Sonoma Coast AVA. There is an usually large amount of volcanic ash in the vineyard soils. The 2016 ‘Rice-Spivak Vineyard’ Pinot Noir is a stunning wine that takes on very pretty aromatics with ripe plum, red cherry compote, cran-pomegranate and white truffle oil. The aromatic range is wonderful and takes you back to the glass for more enjoyment. The minerality and weight of the wine is truly outstanding, as is the strong salinity and lip-smacking acidity. Cran-pomegranate, blood orange zest, volcanic earth and peat moss flavors all show some insane range. While this is drinking marvelously right now, the wine will have an exceedingly long life in the cellar. Drink 2019-2033.

The 2016 Pinot Noir Rice-Spivak Vineyard is pale ruby in the glass and has a pretty nose of violet and lilac with pipe tobacco, pink peppercorn, charcuterie and savory herbs plus a hint of bay leaf. The palate is light to medium-bodied, smooth and silky on entry, then evolving with savory character and firm structuring tannins, finishing very long and layered.

The 2016 Rice-Spivak Vineyard is laced with black cherry, lavender, mint, spice, dried flowers and licorice. Pliant and expressive, with terrific nuance, the 2016 is absolutely gorgeous. The purity of the flavors is striking. At present, the aromatics are not quite as open as they could be, but I imagine all the 2016 is needs is time to be at its very best. The Rice-Spivak Pinot is another highlight in this range of captivating wines from Ross Cobb.

Ross Cobb makes this wine from a vineyard south of Sebastopol, a cool site that ripened to a black intensity in 2016. There are fresh notes of herbs and some stemmy greenness adding pungency in the background, while the foreground is gentle, round and ripe. This needs a year in bottle for those elements to integrate, and will likely benefit from longer aging.

We went on to single vineyard designate the property in 2006 and haven’t missed a vintage since. Rice-Spivak is located just west of Hwy 116 in the Sebastopol hills. Though it is the eastern-most vineyard we work with, it is often picked at the same time as Coastlands due to its relative low elevation and the pooling effect of the cool coastal winds. I love how Rice-Spivak always holds a lovely amount of available fruit on the palate that works nicely with a strong core of minerality and bright acidity.

Ross Cobb’s 2017 Pinot Noir Rice-Spivak Vineyard is light on its feet, perfumed and gracious. Crushed red berries, wild flowers, cinnamon and citrus all perk up this ethereal, mid-weight Pinot. The 50% whole clusters add aromatic presence and savoriness without overpowering the wine. I very much like the sense of energy here. This is such an elegant Pinot.

The 2018 Pinot Noir Rice Spivak Vineyard is pure and expressive this vintage, with layered scents of red cherries, orange peel, saline and earth. The palate is soft, fresh and super spicy, its  charming, juicy red berry fruits calling you in again and again for another sip. It’s a detailed supple version of this cuvée with immediate drinking appeal.

The 2018 Pinot Noir Rice-Spivak Vineyard is a bright, punchy wine. Today, it is brilliant, but also tightly wound. Bright red berry fruit, mint, spice, cedar and earthy notes are all laced together in a complex, multi-dimensional Pinot that has so much to offer. This is an especially minerally, savory style of Pinot that is going to need at least a few years to come around.

The 2019 Pinot Noir Rice Spivak Vineyard was made with about 40% whole clusters and matured for 22 months in 40% new French oak. It has a medium ruby color and pure aromas of cranberries, raspberries and rhubarb—those dark red fruit characteristics of Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir in the 2019 vintage—plus accents of orange peel, Angostura bitters, moss and forest floor. The medium-bodied palate manages a slender frame and very intense flavors, supported by an abundance of silty tannins and juicy acidity driving the very long, very layered finish.
