It zips out of the glass with bright, breezy scents of Golden Delicious apples, juicy pears, and lemon tart, followed by hints of baking bread and allspice. The medium-bodied palate is spicy with a good intensity of orchard fruit flavors and a refreshing backbone, finishing toasty.
\nCrafted in the traditional method from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown on our Honey B Vineyard in Carneros, the 2022 vintage of our Pops Sparkling Wine shows a richer, more rounded expression of our estate fruit. After 24 months of aging on the lees prior to disgorgement, this wine opens with generous notes of ripe yellow apple and pear, along with brioche, toasted almond, and warm pastry. Still firmly in the brut category, this vintage delivers just a hint of sweetness that enhances approachability without compromising freshness.

The traditional method for sparkling wine production involves a second fermentation inside each individual bottle, a labor-intensive process responsible for the wine’s fine, persistent bubbles and layered complexity. After a dry base wine is made, a mixture of wine, yeast, and sugar is added to initiate this secondary fermentation, trapping carbon dioxide in the bottle. The wine is then aged on its lees (spent yeast cells), allowing autolysis to develop characteristic flavors and textures such as brioche, toasted bread, and nuts, along with a creamy mouthfeel, before the sediment is removed through riddling and disgorgement and the wine is topped off with dosage, a mixture of wine and sugar, which determines the final sweetness and style of the wine.
\nWe craft our Pops Sparkling Wine in a brut-style from estate-grown Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from our Honey B Vineyard in Carneros. The base wine for each variety is fermented separately then blended before aging on the lees for 24 months. Our goal with this release was to create a sparkling wine that feels both celebratory and inviting, offering a touch more richness and approachability than previous vintages. The result captures the charm of Honey B Vineyard and the thoughtful craftsmanship behind our sparkling wine program.

Our Honey B Vineyard in Carneros is an ideal site for cool-climate Syrah, allowing the variety to show depth, energy, and complexity. I’m drawn to Syrah for its playful, expressive nature and how distinct it is from our other red wines. We harvest slightly later to encourage a multi-layered fruit profile rather than a lean or herbal style. In the cellar, I select barrels with a slightly heavier toast, adding a subtle layer of smokiness and savory character. This wine is delicious in its youth, with a chewy texture and layered structure, but it truly shines with age. After five or more years in the cellar, the tannins soften and integrate, allowing the dark, rich berry fruit to come forward.

Our Carneros Elizabeth Pinot Noir is named in honor of my grandmother, Elizabeth “Betty” Baldacci, as a testament to her unwavering strength, resilience, and boundless spirit. This wine is intentionally styled as a richer, more serious expression of Pinot Noir as a reflection of its namesake’s enduring presence. We focus on four clones—777, Calera, Pommard, and Swan—to find balance between mouthwatering acidity, concentrated fruit, and elegant tannins. Our color profile is darker than other Carneros Pinot expressions as we allow for a 3-day cold soak followed by daily punch-downs to gently turn over the cap while focusing on keeping the berries intact. The total fermentation time is a bit shorter so that there is less extraction from the seed and skin tannin and more attention on the fruit profile. With four unique rootstock/clone combinations from our Carneros estate vineyard, I have the ability to pick multiple times and keep each of the lots separate to maximize my final blending options.

The Wine
The Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon is a reflection of the rich history of our Winery Ranch vineyard and the iconic terroir of the Stags Leap District AVA. Our vineyard is composed of twelve distinct blocks, including a rare southeast-facing slope on a volcanic knoll. This diversity allows for multiple harvest passes and the opportunity to ferment small, individual lots, each with its own unique character. The Wine
Sourced from Block 3 of our Stella Knight Vineyard, nestled at the base of the Diamond Mountain District, this wine is a standalone expression of the unique qualities of this appellation. The porous soil and steep slope of Block 3 reduce water retention and challenge the vines to deepen their search for moisture, subtly infusing the grapes with minerality. Given the fruit’s robust concentration and texture, I favor a higher new oak usage, embracing the wine’s boldness and ensuring its character fully emerges.

It has a beautiful nose of ripe currant and blueberry fruits as well as spicy wood, lead pencil shavings, and dried flowers. This incredibly classy, pure, layered, and complex 2019 has medium to full-bodied richness, ripe, polished, soft tannins, and just about flawless balance, with all its components nicely integrated. It's just about impossible to resist. As with many 2019s, it's upfront and approachable, yet will age gracefully on its overall balance. Drink this smoking good Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon over the coming two decades. Drink 2025-2045.
