Awatea takes its name from the historic ship SS Awatea (a Maori word meaning 'Eye of the Dawn') that sailed the Auckland – Sydney – Wellington route in the late 1930s. The Awatea was requisitioned as a troop transport in WWII and was sunk off Algeria in 1942.

The grapes for Awatea Merlot/Cabernet '24 were hand harvested from Te Mata Estate’s Hawke’s Bay vineyards between 21 March and 9 April 2024.

The separate parcels of grapes were destemmed before a traditional warm-plunged fermentation and extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were then run to new and seasoned French oak barrels for 17 months, with 28% being new oak. Throughout this time, they were regularly topped and racked. The separate wines were blended in November 2024, then returned to barrel for their second winter. The finished wine was then fined and bottled in November 2025. The final blend is 62% merlot, 27% cabernet sauvignon and 11% cabernet franc.

Te Mata Tasting Note
Bright crimson at the edge with a deep purple-black core, Bullnose ’24 is wonderfully expressive and fragrant. Aromas unfold in layers of violet, fresh raspberry, ripe plum and dark cherry, wrapped in black olive with subtle spice and pepper. The palate amplifies the depth of fruit and textural intensity, delivering concentrated richness, framed by a vibrant, precise acid line that imparts energy and a bracingly youthful edge. With underlying power and elegance, fine persistent tannins carry the wine through to a long, beautifully driven finish. Bullnose ’24 is a showstopper. This is a Bullnose for the ages. The wine is named Bullnose after an early Morris Cowley car, which was nicknamed Bullnose due to its distinctive radiator. The bull emblem that appears on the wine label is drawn from the car’s radiator crest.

The individual lots were each destemmed and given a traditional warm-plunged fermentation. The resulting wines underwent extended maceration on skins before pressing and then a secondary malolactic fermentation. The separate wines were then run to a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barriques for 16 months’ maturation, with 34% being new oak. During this time, they were regularly topped and racked, before blending and then bottling in November 2025.

Alma celebrates Dr James Thomson, a hero of the 1854 Battle of the Alma during the Crimean War and forefather to Te Mata Estate’s Buck family. Knowing the vanquished enemy soldiers had already contracted cholera, Dr Thomson volunteered to tend to their wounds, saving the lives of over four hundred, and sacrificing his own in the process. The medal he was awarded for this selfless act of valour appears on the label of Alma Pinot Noir.

Subtle layers of oyster shell, hazelnut, and flintiness add further complexity and intrigue.

Elston is named for Elston Hall in Nottinghamshire, the ancestral home of Charles Darwin’s family. Darwin’s ‘theory of natural selection’ forms the basis of modern evolutionary theory, the foundation of biology. The Chambers family, who founded Te Mata vineyards, where educated at Elston Hall and carried the importance of education with them, establishing the first schools in Hawke's Bay. The wyvern symbol from above the door of Elston Hall appears on the label.

The superb quality of the 2024 vintage was immediately apparent in the fully ripe grapes that were hand harvested from their separate, individual plots within Te Mata Estate’s vineyards between 26 February and 20 March 2024.

Te Mata Tasting Note
Bright, crystalline lemon-gold, Zara ’25 is immediately luminous in the glass and expressive on the nose. The wine opens with the aromas of white peach, apricot blossom and lychee, layered with Turkish delight and a gentle thread of cinnamon and bergamot. Exotic florals of jasmine, rose petal and orange blossom unfold, underpinned by a subtle richness. The palate is generous and flowing, a seamless expression of ripe stone fruit carried by a silky, textural mouthfeel. Notes of gingerbread, warm spice and soft orchard fruit build through the mid-palate, while a fine peach-skin grip adds structure and shape. A fresh saline edge and poised acidity give Zara ’25 its signature energy and balance, leading to a satisfyingly long, dry finish with an enticing perfume of florals and spice.

The fruit was destemmed and crushed with controlled skin contact blended to enhance the wine’s varietal complexity. The juice was then barrel fermented in seasoned French Oak with a full malolactic fermentation aged on gross lees for nine months, blended and then bottled.

The fully ripe grapes for Cape Crest ’24 were hand harvested from Te Mata Estate’s Bridge Pa and Havelock Hills vineyards between 5 and 14 March 2024.

The separate parcels were each destemmed and lightly crushed, then cooled before a brief period of skin contact. Following pressing and cold-settling, they were all run to a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barrels for fermentation and maturation, with 36% being new oak. The resulting wines were aged on lees, with regular stirring, for a further 11 months before bottling in February, 2025. Cape Crest ’24 is a blend of 86% sauvignon blanc, 9% semillon and 5% sauvignon gris.

Aromas of blackberry, red currant and plum combine with lifted florals, graphite, bay leaf, black olive and hints of cedar. Concentrated ripe fruit fills the palate, where rich dark berry flavours integrate with savoury complexing notes all in a taut, fine-grained, extended frame that finishes long, dry and beautifully composed.

The grapes for Estate Merlot/Cabernet ’25 were harvested between 4 March and 12 April 2025 from Te Mata Estate’s own vineyards in the Havelock Hills, Bridge Pa Triangle, Dartmoor, Havelock North and Gimblett Gravels sub-regions of Hawke’s Bay.

The individual parcels of each variety from each plot were destemmed before undergoing a traditional warm fermentation, followed by extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were pressed, returned to tank for malolactic fermentation, then run off into a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barrels for maturation prior to blending. The wines were regularly topped and racked throughout maturation, then blended and traditionally egg-white fined before bottling. The final blend comprises 52% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 14% Cabernet Franc.

Estate Pinot Noir ’25 was harvested between 25 and 26 February 2025 from Te Mata Estate’s own Woodthorpe Terraces vineyard in the upper Dartmoor Valley.

The wine immediately opens with a lifted, intense, red cherry, raspberry and strawberry core, edged with a violet perfume. Turkish delight and a faint thread of sandalwood and star anise drifts in and out of the ripe, sumptuous palate. Striking, vivid and immediate, the crunchy red fruit and cool, mouth-watering acidity is carried by a supple, silky frame with the lightest dusting of fine tannins. Immediately delicious, Gamay Noir ‘26 finishes long, fresh, and quietly irresistible - leaving a trace of red berries, spice, and a lingering signature line of dry, clean, bright fruit.

In 1995, Te Mata Estate introduced to New Zealand a superior selection of Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc, the grape variety of the best wines of France’s Beaujolais region. Estate Gamay Noir ’26 is a single vineyard wine from Te Mata Estate’s Woodthorpe Terraces vineyard, harvested from 12 to 20 March 2026.

The grapes for Estate Chardonnay ‘25 were harvested between 24 February and 11 March 2025 from Te Mata Estate’s own vineyards in the Woodthorpe Terraces, Bridge Pa Triangle and Havelock Hills sub-regions of Hawke’s Bay.

Coleraine derives its name from the Coleraine vineyard, home of John and Wendy Buck of Te Mata Estate. John’s late grandfather was born in Coleraine in Northern Ireland and the name has been maintained through the family home to the wine. A single vineyard wine until 1989, Coleraine is an assemblage of the finest wines produced from distinct plots within Te Mata Estate’s oldest vineyards first planted in 1892.

The grapes for Coleraine ’24 were hand harvested from Te Mata Estate’s Hawke’s Bay vineyards between 31 March and 8 April 2024.

Each parcel of grapes was destemmed before a traditional warm-plunged fermentation and extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were then run to predominately new French oak barrels for 19 months’ maturation, with 70% being new oak. Throughout this time, they were regularly topped and racked. The assemblage was made in November 2024 and the finished wine was bottled in December 2025. The final blend is 58% cabernet sauvignon, 31% merlot and 11% cabernet franc.

Awatea takes its name from the historic ship SS Awatea (a Maori word meaning “Eye of the Dawn”) that sailed the Auckland – Sydney – Wellington route in the late 1930s. The Awatea was requisitioned as a troop transport in WWII and was sunk off Algeria in 1942.

The wine is named Bullnose after an early Morris Cowley car, which was nicknamed Bullnose due to its distinctive radiator. The bull emblem that appears on the wine label is drawn from the car’s radiator crest.

John’s late grandfather was born in Coleraine in Northern Ireland and the name has been maintained through the family home to the wine. Originally a single vineyard wine, from 1989 Coleraine has been an assemblage of the finest wines produced from distinct plots within Te Mata Estate’s oldest vineyards on the Havelock Hills.

The individual lots were each destemmed and given a traditional warm-plunged fermentation. The resulting wines underwent extended maceration on skins before pressing and then a secondary malolactic fermentation. The separate wines were then run to a mixture of new and seasoned French oak barriques for 16 months’ maturation, with 34% being new oak. During this time, they were regularly topped and racked, before blending and then bottling in November 2025.

The resulting wines were then run to new and seasoned French oak barrels for 17 months, with 28% being new oak. Throughout this time, they were regularly topped and racked. The separate wines were blended in November 2024, then returned to barrel for their second winter. The finished wine was then fined and bottled in November 2025. The final blend is 62% merlot, 27% cabernet sauvignon and 11% cabernet franc.

\nAlma celebrates Dr James Thomson, a hero of the 1854 Battle of the Alma during the Crimean War and forefather to Te Mata Estate’s Buck family. Knowing the vanquished enemy soldiers had already contracted cholera, Dr Thomson volunteered to tend to their wounds, saving the lives of over four hundred, and sacrificing his own in the process. The medal he was awarded for this selfless act of valour appears on the label of Alma Pinot Noir.

\nAwatea takes its name from the historic ship SS Awatea (a Maori word meaning “Eye of the Dawn”) that sailed the Auckland – Sydney – Wellington route in the late 1930s. The Awatea was requisitioned as a troop transport in WWII and was sunk off Algeria in 1942.

Coleraine derives its name from the Coleraine vineyard, home of John and Wendy Buck of Te Mata Estate. John’s late grandfather was born in Coleraine in Northern Ireland and the name has been maintained through the family home to the wine. A single vineyard wine until 1989, Coleraine is an assemblage of the finest wines produced from distinct plots within Te Mata Estate’s oldest vineyards first planted in 1892.

The grapes for Coleraine ’24 were hand harvested from Te Mata Estate’s Hawke’s Bay vineyards between 31 March and 8 April 2024.

Each parcel of grapes was destemmed before a traditional warm-plunged fermentation and extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were then run to predominately new French oak barrels for 19 months’ maturation, with 70% being new oak. Throughout this time, they were regularly topped and racked. The assemblage was made in November 2024 and the finished wine was bottled in December 2025. The final blend is 58% cabernet sauvignon, 31% merlot and 11% cabernet franc.

Coleraine derives its name from the Coleraine vineyard, home of John and Wendy Buck of Te Mata Estate. A single vineyard wine until 1989, Coleraine is an assemblage of the finest wines produced from distinct plots within Te Mata Estate’s oldest vineyards first planted in 1892.

The grapes for Coleraine ’24 were hand harvested from Te Mata Estate’s Hawke’s Bay vineyards between 31 March and 8 April 2024.

Each parcel of grapes was destemmed before a traditional warm-plunged fermentation and extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were then run to predominately new French oak barrels for 19 months’ maturation, with 70% being new oak. Throughout this time, they were regularly topped and racked. The assemblage was made in November 2024 and the finished wine was bottled in December 2025. The final blend is 58% cabernet sauvignon, 31% merlot and 11% cabernet franc.

Layers of dark chocolate, nori, black olive and subtle cedar add complexity, while lifted florals and a savoury coastal nuance enhance its depth, precision and beauty.
\nOn the palate, a concentrated wave of red and dark fruit flows over velvety, cocoa powder textures, as expansive, silky tannins weave seamlessly through the wine. Coleraine derives its name from the Coleraine vineyard, home of John and Wendy Buck of Te Mata Estate. John’s late grandfather was born in Coleraine in Northern Ireland and the name has been maintained through the family home to the wine. A single vineyard wine until 1989, Coleraine is an assemblage of the finest wines produced from distinct plots within Te Mata Estate’s oldest vineyards first planted in 1892.

The grapes for Coleraine ’24 were hand harvested from Te Mata Estate’s Hawke’s Bay vineyards between 31 March and 8 April 2024.

Each parcel of grapes was destemmed before a traditional warm-plunged fermentation and extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were then run to predominately new French oak barrels for 19 months’ maturation, with 70% being new oak. Throughout this time, they were regularly topped and racked. The assemblage was made in November 2024 and the finished wine was bottled in December 2025. The final blend is 58% cabernet sauvignon, 31% merlot and 11% cabernet franc.
