Petit Verdot is one of the 5 noble Bordeaux varieties. It is normally used in blends to bolster the color and tannin. At Windy Flats, Petit Verdot has a more civilized outcome, and though still a monster, it is drinkable and even has some finesse. We achieved 50% veraison by August 3 and color was coming out nicely by the middle of September so we brought it in at 25.5 Brix on September 22, and after a few days of cold soak, inoculated with FX10 yeast and let it roll up to 88o for 7 days before pressing at about 0.2 Brix. In 2021, all 5 varieties were able to ripen nicely, and all 5 Bordeaux varieties are being produced at Hill Family as separate bottling lots. The 2021 Petit Verdot has dense briary aromas with Herbs de Provence, berry hard candy and violets. The wine is surprisingly plushy and graceful for such an intense and concentrated wine.

Family Estate takes Merlot quite seriously, and we believe the Merlot grape has an elegance to offer that is different from Cabernet Sauvignon. The Beau Terre Vineyards are centerpieces for Doug Hill’s accumulated viticultural knowledge. From the row spacing to the trellising, the row direction and clones selected, everything has been carefully thought-out to give Merlot its best expression. The 2022 vintage is a brilliant demonstration of Merlot’s ability to deliver on the promise. Despite some hurdles during the growing season, we created a complex, luscious, well-balanced wine. You’ll find intense fruit on both the nose and the palate, with a full-bodied, smooth and balanced texture. Structured yet plush with dense ripe fruit, warm blackberry and allspice. This stunner finishes with silky, integrated tannins and the potential to age gracefully in the cellar.

Malbec has become a quiet cult favorite, and we have made some wonderful standalone Malbecs that normally go into our Cabernet Sauvignon, but we wanted to let our club members share some of the excitement. We made 3 Malbec lots in 2022, and we found that the structure of the Baker Vineyard from Atlas Peak blended beautifully with the ripe concentration of the Windy Flats, and the vigor of the Beau Terroir. Malbec has become increasingly successful in some parts of the world, and it is a cult favorite here in Napa. We only made a small quantity for our adventurous club buyers. The 2022 Malbec is deep, rich, and alluring, with expressive notes of blueberry, black plum, and crème de cassis. Plush and inviting on the palate, with blackberry, dark raspberry, and delicate floral notes, supported by warming notes of graham cracker and licorice. This multilayered wine interweaves fine-grained tannins and a velvety texture perfectly.
\nThe Saltonstall Vineyard is planted in a cool breezy coastal valley 15 miles west of Petaluma. The 2022 was picked in 2 lots, both harvested on October 4. Clone 115 (rows 1 to 18, 3.2 tons) was 23.5 Brix, and the clones 667 and 777 were picked at 22.8 Brix. The fruit was destemmed not crushed, given 4 days cold soak with Egide yeast as a placeholder, in open top tanks, and then we added RB2 yeast. The tanks were punched down twice a day, and the wine went to barrel 2 days later for its 10-month maturation period. With lower sugars but a nice acidity, the 2022 Saltonstall is more delicate than the 2021, but it still has the Saltonstall character we love so much. Single vineyard wines are not blended for consistency, so they express the evolution of the site and the year, making for interesting vintage comparisons. This is a classic wine expressive of the Sonoma Coast with savory aromas of wild cherry, sumac, toasted almond and tamarind. The palate has a soft texture and nice core of acidity, showing its youth and exuberance. The wine broadens with flavors of barberries, quince and rhubarb and will benefit greatly from decanting in the early years of enjoyment.
\nThis wine celebrates Aloha ‘Āina and the unique collaboration between Native Hawaiian and world class surfer Moana Jones Wong and the Hill Family, who are fourth generation California farmers. Aloha ‘Āina and Aloha Kai translates to “love of the land and sea,” and is rooted upon a sense of being connected to all living things.
\nBlend Composition: Chardonnay, Albariño, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Canelli, Viognier, Sémillon
\nDouble Barrel is the smallest blend that we make from our most serious lots of Cabernet Sauvignon. We unapologetically make this wine for collectors and do not expect it to reveal its intense charm and elegance for many years. The three-bottle set is accompanied by a limited edition wooden box that proprietor Ryan Hill peppers with 6-shot utilizing an antique double barrel side-by-side shotgun.

Since 2012, the Hill Family has been creating a unique blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah known for its punch and vigor. The Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon lots are always a treat to blend, and eventually we find the place where this “Team of Rivals” fits together better than each could show separately. With its well-known color and density, and a year in the bottle, it will be ready to swoop down and amaze people. Landon is 14 now, and he likes to help in the vineyard, so we love to see Landon on the label representing the next generation. In many wine regions of the world, Syrah is considered a natural blending partner with Cabernet Sauvignon, and we couldn’t agree more. The blend changes a bit with every vintage, but 2023 gives us 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Syrah and 8% Malbec from our Atlas Peak vineyard. This gives us a layered and complex version of Like a Hawk, one that is bold and serious. With its well-known color and density and a year in the bottle, it will be ready to swoop down and amaze. As it is with many serious wines, a little time in the cellar will be rewarded.

Each vineyard, each block, each clone has been harvested, fermented and aged as a separate lot, which gives us almost unlimited blending opportunities. This wine is a masterclass in blending possibilities, since even the smallest amount (as little as 1%) of any given lot can change the finished wine. With so many possibilities available, this is one of my favorite wines to create. These vineyard sites rewarded us with complex aromas, perfectly ripe fruit, plenty of dark berry and cherry flavors, and a silky texture even at this young age. Please have patience, if you can, and give this wine a little time in the cellar.

Red Door is an exuberant wine blended to take advantage of our best lots that work together in the most rich and flavorful way, regardless of variety or sub-appellation. \nThe Stewart Ranch vineyard in Carneros has a cool breezy climate that brings out the depth and finesse of the Pinot Noir grape. The vineyard is planted with the Pommard and 115 clones on 101-14 rootstock utilizing a 5 x 8 spacing. The Pommard clone was harvested on September 21 and the 115 clone was harvested on September 25. After a few days of cold soak, we inoculated with RB2 yeast. The destemmed grapes were dropped into an open top tank, so we used mostly punch downs on the caps. After 14 days, the Pinot Noir was pressed off and went to barrel a few days later to spend time relaxing in its new oak. The barrels were stirred from time to time and developed a nice smooth graceful palate over the next 11 months. The blend of the two wines offers a nice complexity from the ripe style of 115, and the fresher/brighter style from the Pommard clone. Classic Carneros Pinot Noir with captivating aromas of cranberry, raspberry, black cherry toasty vanilla and fig. On entry, the texture is soft and round with rich layers of raspberry, currant, and blackberry pie. Then the juicy core reveals layers of intense cherry, lavender, spice, and cinnamon, with a delicate note of cola. The finish has structure, but the tannins are supple and polished.

Due to the focus and flexibility of Doug and Leslie’s team, we were still able to harvest excellent Chardonnay from multiple sites to secure the layered expression Carly’s Cuvee deserves. Made with no malolactic influence and only light oak, this crisp and fruity Chardonnay will please people looking for a wine that enhances food and holds its own out on the patio. Carly Hill is Doug and Darci Hill’s daughter, and her contributions to Hill Family Estate are honored with this beautiful wine. The 2024 Carly’s Cuvee Chardonnay has a beautiful floral nose showing the versatility of the Chardonnay grape. Aromas of lemon blossom, ripe golden apple, and caramel circle the glass. On the palate, the wine shows excellent intensity and balance, with flavors of apple, coconut and toasted almond flavors. The underlying creamy texture gives Carly’s luscious appeal, even though it has very little oak influence and no malolactic fermentation.

This bright and crisp, yet luscious white wine blend shows the best that each of these four varieties offers. The Viognier brings the bright fruit aromas followed by an almost creamy texture. The Semillon offers classic aromas of citrus and stone fruit. The Sauvignon Blanc shines a light on the crisp apple and apricot aromas. The Muscat Canelli is known for its intense floral notes of jasmine, orange blossom and honeysuckle. It is as juicy and refreshing as you might expect, with a lush core of tropical fruit. The finish is full of fresh fruit flavors, a hint of vanilla and a bit of citrus leaves. Summertime in a glass.
The 2024 Hill Family Estate Sauvignon Blanc is largely from the Stewart Ranch with its toes in the estuary south of the city of Napa. It is a late developing site and its tropical flavors, crisp acidity and cool climate chemistry add zip to the lovely riper Windy Flats Clone 1 grapefruit character. Alba Fria, one of the new “sleeping beauty” yeasts was used on many of the lots that fermented in stainless steel tanks. After dryness, the wine was racked to neutral oak, acacia, and stainless-steel barrels to rest until bottling in January after a brief fining and settling. The 2024 Sauvignon Blanc offers aromas of orange blossom, nectarine, and white rose. Crafted in an entirely dry style, the white peach and melon flavors create a creamy lingering palate with balanced acidity and a caressing finish.
\nThe 2025 Albariño comes from the Dunlap vineyard off Los Carneros Avenue. This vineyard capitalizes on the cool fog from the San Pablo Bay which Carneros is known for. Like many of our white wines, we harvest Albariño on the early side, keeping the acidity bright and the alcohol low. We coax it through a slow cool fermentation in a large stainless-steel tank which preserves all the juicy fruit aromas and flavors. This grape is originally from Spain, and we make it in the same style with crisp acidity, bright floral aromas, juicy citrus notes and plenty of minerality.

You are invited to join us for an unforgettable epicurean adventure curated by local chef Itamar Abramovitch. The evening will feature live music from Hill Family favorite, Charlie Jensen, followed by a seated dinner set at rustic tables amongst the orchard and grapevines. Chef Itamar specializes in live cooking over an open flame with a heavy focus on creating dishes around whatever the land provides. Highlights will include oysters on the half shell and fillet medallions grilled to perfection on Black Betty, Itamar's mobile smoker. To honor the tradition of Tomatoville, tomatoes will be featured throughout the evening.
