The hugely-heralded 2013 vintage in Napa Valley is famous for good reason: its balance of ripe fruit and structure is second to no vintage that anyone can remember. Our flagship Cabernet: Artefact, shows this balance and reflects its vineyards with a sense of place. It is composed of 94% Kenefick Ranch and 6% Corona Vineyard. The very special Kenefick parcel is located off Pickett Road close to the hills across the street from its famous neighbor, and consists of clones 7, 191, and 341. The Corona Vineyard is in Oakville’s western hills utilizing clone 337. The combination of these two sites has been the winning formula for Artefact since 2011. Kenefick provides complex layers of soft, lush, deep fruit with a freshness that is unexpected; while the Corona, planted in pure shale, supplies dense mountain structure and minerality with dark, intense fruit. Notes of blackberry coulis, brandied cherries, potpourri, Asian spice and brioche lead to a rich, densely stacked palate with flavors that echo the nose. The finish is big, but avoids the heaviness and structure that some 2013's show. We are thrilled to share this wine to you! 19 barrels produced.

December 2015 (94 points) – Robert Parker
The blockbuster 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2013 Artefact was aged 21 months in 100% new French oak and comes completely from the Kenefick Ranch, which is adjacent to the Eisele Vineyard in Calistoga. Opaque purple and full-bodied, it offers up notes of pen ink, graphite, blackberry and cassis as well as some background toasty oak, baking spice box, licorice, and some loamy soil undertones. This big, rich, intense wine should hit its prime in about 4-5 years and last 20 or more. Another long-aging wine, and one with probably 50 years of evolution ahead of it.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Artefact is a bold, punchy wine that captures the radiance and intensity of Kenefick Ranch without falling into the trap of being excessively heavy, which is always an issue with this warm site in Calistoga. Iron, smoke, plum, cedar and leather build into the intense finish. This is a fairly approachable wine that can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring.

2013 offered the most rewarding opportunities for this site that we have seen since 2009. As the farming is now really dialed in, we are finding we can pick this site earlier with the same level of phenolic ripeness, leading to more vibrant wines with more grace, yet still with great depth and richness. Aromas of bright cherry, wintergreen, clove, wet stone, white flowers and cinnamon hang above the glass. The mouthfeel is finesse-driven and lithe with extremely fine-grained tannins allowing the classic cool-climate flavors to blossom.

Wine created from old vines tell a story of another place, of another time, and we marvel at this – we see the backdrop to this walking the vineyard, seeing the broken down tractors and artefacts in the vineyard, and relish the opportunity to provide that experience to others. Planted in 1939 by Alfred Frediani, who still helps with the farming today, these vines are on Pickett Road in Calistoga on unbelievably great soils. The vines display the influence of this great terroir in their tiny size, given their age. The 2013 vintage is remarkably lithe and supple with aromas of black fruits, dark chocolate, a high-toned strawberry note, black pepper, dried thyme and sweet vanilla. The palate is the most lush and layered we have encountered from this site, adding length to the finish, which soars.

One of the most unique wines in the range, the 2013 Petite Sirah Old Vine oozes character and class. Inky blue and purplish fruit, smoke, licorice, crème de cassis and spices are some of the signatures. The Old Vine offers plenty of Petite density, yet the tannins are also nicely tamed, which makes for a wine that can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring.

The 2013 Petite Sirah Old Vines is 100% Petite Sirah from the famous Frediani Vineyard in Calistoga. This vineyard was planted by Alfred Frediani, the current owner, in 1939, is dry-farmed and head-trained. The 2013 spent 20 months in 50% new French oak and is a monster. Massive extraction of blackberry and blueberry fruit, an inky purple color, a huge, massive, monolithic mouthfeel, and mind-numbing extract and tannin are all present in this huge wine, which won't even hit its prime for at least a decade and then probably last at least 30-50 years afterward.

The string of fantastic vintages that began in 2012 in Napa Valley was not about to abate in 2014, and we are the fortunate recipients of this magical growing season. Although it was the height of the drought, our Cabernet sites, planted in extremely rocky soils, are just plain used to it. These sites are a very special block at Kenefick Ranch near the top of Pickett Road, and the moon-like Corona Vineyard above western Oakville, planted in pure shale. The combination has been the same since 2011, and the harmony with which they combine produces this extravagant beauty. Dark purple in color with modern Napa aromatics of mocha, deepest black fruits, crushed mulberry, loam, bourbon vanilla and graphite. The palate echoes the nose with huge flavors, mouth-coating texture and surprisingly fine tannins. The finish lasts longer than you care to count, and although drinkable now, this wine has a huge future.

The 2014 Artefact Cabernet Sauvignon is 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc, with most of it coming from the Kenefick Ranch adjacent to the Eisele Vineyard in Calistoga. This is a beauty. Dense ruby/purple, with notes of blueberry, black raspberry, licorice and incense, the wine is full-bodied, with sweet tannin, adequate acidity, good vibrancy and an open, lush mouthfeel. Drink it over the next 15 or so years.

It is incredibly difficult and competitive to source Pinot Noir in the Fort Ross – Seaview AVA on the West Sonoma Coast, making us all the more excited about our now 6 year relationship with this grower, who has given us so much pleasure in, and understanding of Pinot Noir. Yet, the mystery continues to unfold. Every year is like a new chapter in an epic saga. 2014 brought many of the same characteristics as 2013: great aromatics, freshness amidst ripeness and elegant textures. It was fermented in exactly the same way: 100% native yeast, 100% native malo-lactic with no racking until bottling, yet the vintage difference is there. The ‘14 is a little more restrained with a slightly greater quantity of very fine tannins, more forest floor and oolong tea and more spice to balance the exuberant fruit. Still, the site is present; the clones 115 and Old Wente providing the Yin to each other’s Yang.

A consistently warm year in which Cabernet thrived, turned out some of the most concentrated wines of the century. This is 100% from the Kenefick Ranch, Block 7, immediately across the road from Eisele Vineyard. Aromatics of blackberry jam, electric lingonberry torte, grilled bread, cinnamon, clove, dark chocolate and a deep minerality set the stage. The palate does what only Napa can do, with a layered, sweet, unctuous profile and plentiful, fine tannins. The finish features a panoply of flavors that seemingly go on forever.

2015 was a year to remember on the True Coast, close to the Pacific. May fog and light rain sabotaged the flowering, and the result was near-historically-low yields. This means that instead of the usual 14-17 barrels from Kashaya, we made just 7 barrels! This also resulted in a highly aromatic, densely concentrated, incredibly spirited Pinot. Aromatics of raspberry, strawberry, hibiscus, Oolong tea, clove, jasmine and pink flowers are effusive. The palate is full of finesse with a beautiful, graceful texture and fine tannins, framing deep yet directional flavors echoing the nose. The finish is elegant, as Kashaya always is, leaving plenty of room for the long flavors to linger.

Coming from a single vineyard in the northern part of the Fort Ross-Seaview region, the 2015 Pinot Noir Kashaya (aged 11 months in 46% new French oak) offers textbook mulberry/black raspberry fruit, lots of sappy herbs and rose garden nuances, medium-bodied richness, and a ripe, concentrated, yet balanced style on the palate.

2015 was a year to remember on the True Coast, close to the Pacific. May fog and light rain sabotaged the flowering, and the result was near-historically-low yields. This means that instead of the usual 14-17 barrels from Kashaya, we made just 7 barrels! This also resulted in a highly aromatic, densely concentrated, incredibly spirited Pinot. Aromatics of raspberry, strawberry, hibiscus, Oolong tea, clove, jasmine and pink flowers are effusive. The palate is full of finesse with a beautiful, graceful texture and fine tannins, framing deep yet directional flavors echoing the nose. The finish is elegant, as Kashaya always is, leaving plenty of room for the long flavors to linger.

The deep, rocky soils at Kenefick Ranch in Block 7, continue creating wines of minerality and punch, while the long growing season allowed the vines to produce wines of deep fruit, making one of the most powerful, yet elegant Artefacts to date. Many of you have been waiting for this one, and we think you will not be disappointed. A nose of roasted chestnut, morello cherry pie, wild strawberry, crème de cassis, clove-studded ham and licorice fill the glass, giving a sense of the huge structure and power on tap. In the mouth, the wine displays intense fruit and structure, with polished tannins surrounding the fat, layered, lush mouthfeel. The finish soars and promises a huge future in the cellar.

One-hundred percent Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 21 months in 100% new French oak, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Artefact is very deep purple-black in color and sings of crème de cassis, baked black berries and mulberries with wafts of preserved plums, roasted coffee beans, licorice, tar and tilled soil. Full-bodied, rich and packed with black fruit and savory layers, it has a firm, grainy frame with a lovely backbone and a very long finish. 375 cases produced.

More classic blue fruits, damp earth, bay leaf, and herbal notes emerge from the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Artefact, which comes all from a single block in the Kenefick Ranch vineyard and spent 22 months in new barrels. These older vines planted in the early 90’s continue to WOW with depth and intensity, and the rocky sandstone soils give this wine a minerality and snap that is a blast to experience. South facing terraces always guarantee ripening at this vineyard, and the purity of flavor and aromatics that result are amazing. Red plum, strawberry jam, kirsch, white pepper, sage, iris and orange peel jump from the glass. The palate is dense and sappy, with a smooth, luxurious appeal, leading to an elegant and finesse-driven finish.

The 2016 Grenache Paras Vineyard (located at 1,400 feet in elevation on Mt. Veeder) is made using 100% de-stemmed grapes aged for 21 months in used French oak puncheons. Medium garnet-purple colored, it sings of red roses, kirsch and redcurrant jelly with suggestions of baking spices, cinnamon stick, crushed rocks and pepper. The palate is full-bodied, rich, plush and seductive with layer upon layer of perfumed red fruits, finishing very long and wonderfully fragrant.

There's not much Grenache on Mt. Veeder, and the 2016 Grenache Paras Vineyard comes from a high-density planting of 100% Grenache that was destemmed and brought up in neutral oak. It has a medium ruby color as well as a spicy, complex, nuanced style of spiced strawberries, black raspberries, savory herbs, and dried rose petals. It's ripe, sexy, medium to full-bodied, has fine tannins, and will drink beautifully for a decade.

Opens with a burst of rose petal and raspberry flavors before unveiling a serious, firm structure, accented by cherry, crushed rock and smoky beef notes. Hands off for now. Best from 2020 through 2026.

The spice, floral notes and freshness of the wines are always a thrill, and the 2017 is no different, but in this vintage the fruit quality is intensely deep. Aromas of Bing cherry pit, fresh raspberry, anise, 5-spice, lavender, beetroot, woodsmoke and a hint of Madagascar vanilla burst from the glass. The wine comes in at 13.9% alcohol, and the palate walks that tight rope we love so much between indulgence and restraint, with richness and acid balance, and excellent flavor intensity. The finish features Fort Ross-Seaview’s hallmark graceful tannins, allowing the flavors to really soar.

Medium-bodied, the palate is delicately played and refreshing with fantastic intensity and a long, perfumed finish. 359 cases produced.

It was 75% destemmed and spent 11 months in 42% new French oak. Impressive notes of ripe strawberries, flowers, violets, and a touch of earthy underbrush give way to a medium-bodied, elegant Pinot Noir that has great tannins and terrific balance. It’s beautifully done and will evolve for at least a decade.

Our treasured monopole, La Place Vineyard, has stepped up its game in 2017! The second vintage of this wine displays exotic, riper aromatics, with denser fruit and a more layered texture. Aromatics of ripest plum, exotic blackberry, dark chocolate, bright red raspberry notes and exotic spices fill the glass. The palate features this vineyard’s trademark silky tannins, but the overall texture is one of depth and power, leading to a soaring, long finish. Truly a wine of place, like no other. Our beloved unicorn. Low yields were on display here with just 108 cases produced from 4 barrels.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon La Place comes from a tiny vineyard not far from Hourglass and is all Cabernet Sauvignon fermented in neutral oak before aging in new oak. It has a beautiful, full-bodied, elegant profile as well as lots of black cherry and currant fruits intermixed with notes of tobacco, gravelly earth, and lead pencil. It will drink well for 15+ years or more.

Made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 22 months in 100% new French oak, the deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon La Place Vineyard features fragrant cassis, baked plums and dried mulberries with hints of fallen leaves, dried herbs and tobacco. Big, rich, full-bodied and firmly textured with a fair bit of chewiness, it has a long earth and spice-laced finish. 108 cases were made.

Our first vintage of Artefact Cabernet was 2005, making this is our 15th release. Time flies, but we are having a blast! 2019 was such a tremendous year for Napa and Sonoma, and we are thrilled to present this wine to you. The fruit comes from Clone 7 and 191 vines planted over 20 years ago at Kenefick Ranch in extremely rocky soils. The color is a deep purple/black, with red edges. The nose is a huge, complex, evolving beast with notes of every imaginable red, black and blue fruit, dark chocolate, sage and asian spices. On the palate, this powerful, layered Cab is drenched in luxurious fruit and framed by the finest oak spice. The tannins are present and powerful, yet ultra-fine and pillowy, giving body and character yet never seeming aggressive. The result is a velvety, powerful wine with tons of length and ability to age.

Joe CzerwinskiA killer effort, sourced from Kenefick Ranch in Calistoga, Relic's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Artefact includes 4% Petit Verdot. Matured 20 months in new French oak, it offers scents of crushed stone, cedar and cassis on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is rich and expansive, creamy and lush, long and mouthwatering. This checks all the boxes, being harmonious and even pretty, while being packed with power.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Artefact Kenefick Block 7 needs bottle age, but it’s a big, blockbuster styled effort offering lots of ripe currant and cassis fruits, notes of spicy oak and chocolate, full-bodied richness, and a layered, mouth-filling, concentrated style. A blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot brought up in new oak, hide bottles for a good 4-5 years and enjoy over the following two decades.

It is such an honor to work with the Frediani family and these old vines planted in the 1940s and 1980s. Charbono is one of the rarest grapes of Napa Valley, having been loved by the Italian immigrant families, but gradually pulled out to plant, mainly, Cabernet. It is ideally suited to the up-valley, rocky sites where it retains acidity well. The color is a deep purple with a magenta edge. Aromatics are effusive and sultry, with hugely charming blue and purple fruit, chocolate and hints of mint. On the palate, the 2019 displays the dense concentration of the year, with layers of deep fruit cascading along on the juicy, smooth finish.

Baked plums, blueberries, violets, and iron notes all emerge from the 2019 Charbono Frediani Vineyard, a medium to full-bodied, elegant, if not pretty, expression of this variety that has loads to love. It’s drinking nicely today and should last for a decade. This is 100% Charbono and comes from vines planted in the 1940s. It was raised in once used French oak.

Sourced from the Frediani Vineyard in Calistoga, there are just 62 cases of Relic's 2019 Charbono. An almost forgotten grape in Napa, this version was made in older oak yet is inky in color, with layers of black cherries, blackberries and plums. It's full-bodied, rich and intense, with plenty of substance, yet the tannins are ripe and supple, yielding an almost melted-chocolate finish—long, velvety and mouthwatering, with perhaps just a touch of warmth.

In 2019, we had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with the legendary Larry Hyde and his son, Chris, at Hyde Vineyards on not only Chardonnay, but Merlot. Insiders know that Merlot needs a cooler, steady growing season, and most importantly: clay soils to develop color and flavor. This perfect combination exists at Hyde, and Merlot sings here. The color is an opaque dark ruby with a black core. The heady aromas fill the glass with scents of damson plum, blackberry, red cherry compote, mission fig, spice cake and bourbon vanilla. On the palate, the deep, dark flavors are energized by the framing acidity to make a wine that is at once rich and unctuous, yet buoyant as well. Smooth tannins frame the endless, lush finish.

It is hard to believe that this is our 11th release of Kashaya Pinot Noir. As these vines have aged, and we have dialed in the winemaking to suit the site, we are even more thrilled with the results. As you know, there are precious few vineyards in the vaunted Fort Ross-Seaview AVA, and we feel so fortunate to work with this rare and spectacular site. As usual, we fermented the wine with its own spontaneous yeast, with 33% whole clusters, similar in many ways to the 2018, yet with the extra wow factor that 2019 brings. The color is a deep, red cherry with great density. Aromatics fire from the glass with notes of strawberry coulis, sweet cherry pie, oolong tea, cracked white pepper and vanilla. The palate is smooth, elegant and harmonious, with the extra fine tannins supporting the rich, lively flavors on the long finish.

Moving to the reds, the 2019 Kashaya Pinot Noir was two-thirds destemmed and brought up in one-third new French oak. Notes of wild strawberries, raspberries, flowers, and integrated stems define the nose, and it’s medium-bodied, balanced, and has considerable elegance on the palate. It will keep for 7-8 years easily.

One of our personal favorite wines. From organically-grown vines perched on the extremely rocky slopes of Moon Mountain, just over the ridge from Mt Veeder, this is a mountain wine. We treat this very traditionally, co-fermenting the Mourvèdre with small amounts of Syrah and Grenache with 50% of its whole clusters. The wine was fermented with native yeast and aged in 500 liter older French oak puncheons for 19 months. Featuring a dark ruby color, this wine is a great balance of the sauvage and the modern, with a huge nose of strawberry, raspberry, black cherry, white pepper, rosemary, dried thyme and mint. On the palate, expect a lush yet elegantly lacy wine with sneaky mountain structure framing the rich, authoritative flavors. The finish is a beauty with no hard edges and a ton of perfume.

Red and blue fruits, ground pepper, and subtle leafy herbs notes emerge from the 2019 Mourvedre, a medium-bodied blend of 85% Mourvèdre, 8% Syrah, and 7% Grenache that was co-fermented and 50% destemmed. Fresh, elegant, and downright pretty on the palate, this balanced Mourvèdre shines on all accounts. I like it today, yet I’d be shocked if it didn’t evolve for 10-12 years.

Relic's 2019 Mourvèdre includes small proportions of Syrah and Grenache and is aged only in older French oak puncheons of 500 liters. On the nose, it hints of truffles, raspberries and cherries, while in the mouth, it's medium to full-bodied, not too heavy or rich, nicely balanced and easy to drink. There's a long, silky finish, with touches of cranberry.

The Moulds Vineyard is the jewel of Oak Knoll, perched on a “bench” above the valley floor. Here the alluvial rock has collected over the millennia giving the sub-soil great drainage that translates into excellent wine. The vineyard is tended with the utmost care. In 2019, the vines enjoyed a fantastic vintage, with a long, steady growing season and enough warmth to bring this Cabernet into top form. The color has a strikingly deep purple core, hinting at the richness to come. The aromatics are brooding and exotic with blackberry purée, black cherry, dark chocolate, anise, toasted bread, dark vanilla and sage. On the palate, one would not guess this is a cooler spot in the valley, as the wine displays huge layers of dense, dark, rich flavors that carry through to a long, palate-staining finish.

It's faintly herbal, with notions of sage and bay leaf, even some olive notes, accenting black cherries and cassis. Full-bodied, rich and velvety without being heavy or dense, there's an attractive airiness despite the size, with a plush, open-knit texture on the long finish.

Plum, blackberries, cassis, green tobacco, and sappy herb notes all emerge from the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Moulds Vineyard, a medium to full-bodied, ripe, textured, supple 2019 that’s already drinking nicely. A mix of 169 and 685 Clones and aged in new barrels, drink it over the coming 10-15 years.

A pretty, medium-bodied, elegant expression of this fabulous variety, the 2019 Grenache Paras Vineyard gives up a complex perfume of kirsch and strawberry fruits as well as peppery herbs, rose petals, and assorted sappy, floral nuances. Ethereal, balanced, and lively, it was all destemmed, but given its wild perfume and complexity, I’d certainly have guessed it had some stems. Drink this beauty over the coming 10-12 years. This is 100% Grenache from a terraced hillside vineyard in Mt. Veeder.

The 2019 Scarpa Syrah hails once again from the Cortese Vineyard in Coombsville, farmed lovingly by hand by Dave and Kathy Cortese. This north-facing, extremely rocky volcanic site was planted as early as 1989, which means these vines are in their prime to create extremely concentrated, aromatic Syrahs. The kaleidoscopic nose blasts from the glass with blue and purple fruits, orange rind, violet, bacon fat, white pepper and clove. The presence on the palate is vivid with flavor, giving life to a layered, unctuous texture which expands through the powerful finish.

Ripe blue fruits, peppery herbs, bacon fat, and violet notes emerge from the 2019 Scarpa Syrah Cortese Vineyard, a Northern Rhône look-alike from Napa’s Coombsville AVA that was completely destemmed and brought up in 45% new French oak. Medium to full-bodied, elegant, and lively on the palate, it’s gorgeous any way you look at it. Drink bottles over the coming decade.
